Meet Shakti Mohan: The Dancing Diva

You were told that you'd never be able to walk again. Tell us about that period.
I was on my way to fetch my little sister from school when I met with an accident. A bike which was at a very high speed ran over my leg while I was crossing the road. My leg was so badly fractured that it took me almost seven months to be able to stand on my legs again. Doctors had confirmed that though my leg will get better with time, I would never be able to walk without support leave aside dancing. I was just four years old then but understood everything that he said. But my family stood by me. My sisters and my mother supported me immensely throughout this period. They had full faith in God, they were sure that nothing so tragic could happen to me. They kept motivating me and pushing me to start walking again. I made that extra effort and with their support, confidence and with God's grace I started walking again.

You also revealed once that you wanted to be an IAS officer. And now you're among India's most popular dancers. How did this happen?
I would like to blame Terence sir entirely for this. I was very good at studies, I even topped in my university (Mumbai University) during graduation. But I was also very good at dancing, I used to catch rhythms and steps even when I was little. Dancing was something I naturally enjoyed. So when Terence sir gave me a scholarship, I just could not say no. My sisters had already made their way into showbiz, so that also gave me the confidence to take this up.

We have seen you set the screen on fire with your sizzling item numbers. When will we get to see you in full fledged role?
Well, I have received offers but I would only choose a role when it suits me totally. I would like to be a part of a movie which is based on dancing as I think I can showcase my skills completely in a dance oriented film. So I am just waiting for that role to come to me.

So coming back to Jhalak, how has the journey been so far?
It’s been really amazing. Every day is a new experience; every moment is a new learning. I have made some really good friends on Jhalak and I am enjoying every second of it.

Who do you think is your toughest contender on Jhalak this season?

I think it is chotu Akshat. The kind of energy and moves he has is really inspiring. But, its not really a competition for us anymore, I love dancing and enjoy a lot on Jhalak.

Do you think Karan Tacker's potential has still not been utilised to the fullest. Do you think he is yet to give his best performance?

No, I think Karan Tacker has given some really wonderful performances so far. His performances are always very energetic and entertaining. Be it Suchitra or Elena, they have given some really beautiful performances and I am sure his next choreographer, Bhawna too will deliver some full on entertaining numbers on stage.

Who is your favourite judge on the show?

It has to be Madhuri ma'am. I just love her. Whenever she come on the sets and hugs me, I get tears in eyes. I am totally charmed by her. I have learnt a lot from dance numbers. Her expression, charm, moves are priceless. I just can't stop myself from staring at her. I love her so much that I can even do jhaadu-pocha at her home.

Tell us about Remo D'souza.

He is the master of dance. Your mistakes can never go unnoticed in front of him. He is very critical and technical when it comes to dance. And unke saamne galti ki to pata hai vo galti chhupegi nahi.

How do you like Karan Johar as a judge?

I knew nothing about Karan sir before the show. I only knew that he is an ace filmmaker. But now that we meet him in person and get to interact with him, we are totally in awe of him. The way he talks, his sentences, his wit brings a spark to the show. He is so positive and the amount of knowledge he has is something we all really look up to.

Any message for your TOI fans?

I would like to thank all of them for their constant love and support. I was just an ordinary girl and it’s their love and confidence in me that has made me reach where I am today. I feel blessed and honoured.
