This movie is a biopic on reformer and educationist Savitribai Phule, based on the works of Sarjoo Katkar. As a child, Savitribai Phule fights against the sati system. She gets married to Jyothiba, who believes in providing education to the downtrodden, particularly women, which angers the Brahmin community. It is Jyothiba who educates his Savitribai, who later becomes the pioneer of social reforms.To bring enlightenment among women and the downtrodden, Savitribai joins hands with her husband and opens a school to educate girls and Dalits. The school is attacked, but it doesn't deter Savitribai from working for the welfare of women. At each step, she faces hurdles, but she comes up with novel ideas. She even performs the last rites of her husband.Director Vishal Raj, who has directed movies like Ingale Maarga and July 22 1947, is back with another classic. The film is well-crafted, with a neat screenplay. Actors Thara and Suchendra Prasad excel in their roles as Savitribai and Jyothiba. This movie is not for those with a penchant for commercial films.
