Gauranga Das

We all have toxic members in our family-- be it a distant aunt or a relative. But how you deal with them makes all the difference in your life. "Toxic family behaviour should not cost you your mental peace. You don’t have to argue, prove, or absorb disrespect to keep relationships intact. Sometimes calm agreement, smart responses, or politely calling things out protects your self-respect. Setting boundaries with family is not arrogance, it is emotional strength and self-protection," writes Gauranga Das in a social media post. For the unversed, Gauranga Das is a monk and spiritual leader, and he is an inspiration to many. Here we list the three ways to deal with toxic family members as shared by him:

2/4

They say "tumse kuch nahi hoga"

"Don't argue. Don't explain. Just smile and say, "You are absolutely right. The moment you agree with them, they are left with nothing to say. And they usually go quiet on their own," Das explained.

3/4

When they give you free gyaan, ask them for help

"If they say, 'Look at Sharma ji's son, such a great job. And look at you.' You reply, 'Okay, then please help me get a job like Sharma ji's son.' The moment you ask them for help, they disappear. After that, they think twice before poking you again," he explained.

4/4

Don't act weak

"Call it out politely. When they taunt you or interfere, say it clearly, 'Mama ji, why are you speaking like this?', 'Bua ji, please don't talk to me in this tone.' When you call them out calmly, it scares them a little. They become careful with their words. Remember, your mental peace is in your hands. Instead of ignoring toxicity, just because it is family, learn to set boundaries. Because your respect is non-negotiable," he said.
