Significance of Turmeric and Kumkum in Puja Rituals as per an astrologer
In Hindu rituals, whether it’s a puja (worship) or a fast, turmeric is offered to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Gauri at the beginning, and they are decorated with kumkum. This means that turmeric and kumkum are essential elements in the worship process. Turmeric is believed to complete and enhance the puja, while kumkum (vermillion powder) is considered a symbol of purity and sanctity.
According to Celebrity Astrologer Parduman Suri, applying turmeric tilak (mark) on the forehead during worship helps balance and control the body’s energy centers or chakras. Turmeric is also considered to bring prosperity and good fortune, which is why it is applied on the bride and groom before marriage, with the intention of bringing good luck into their married life. It is believed that turmeric protects newlywed couples from the evil eye. Without kumkum, a married woman’s adornment is considered incomplete.
The use of turmeric in puja is said to invoke the power and energy of the Sun.
Astrologer Suri further explains that turmeric and kumkum hold great significance in puja. Turmeric is associated with the planet Jupiter, while kumkum represents the planet Mars.
It is believed that when married women offer turmeric to Goddess Parvati, it ensures their prosperity. Using turmeric and kumkum in worship helps ward off negative energy. Kumkum is also offered to Goddess Lakshmi, and applying it on the third eye (ajna chakra) is believed to neutralize negative energies.
Turmeric is considered a symbol of Lord Vishnu's blessings. By offering turmeric during puja, one invites positive energy and blessings for happiness and prosperity. On the other hand, applying kumkum helps protect against the influence of negative forces. The application of turmeric and kumkum on married women is also said to awaken the divine energy of Goddess Durga within them.
