One fine spring day in 1978, two teenage boys from Texas were looking for arrowheads and fossils at a nearby stream. But instead of finding a little piece of flint, Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin found a huge bone protruding from the muddy waters near the banks of the Bosque River.
This singular find has revolutionised our knowledge about the prehistory of the Ice Age. According to the historic account maintained by the
National Park Service, the museum experts were able to confirm that this giant bone belonged to the femur of a Columbian mammoth. Not just a lone bone, but the beginning of what would become known as one of the most important Ice Age fossil sites in Texas!
A total of 24 mammoths, along with other Ice Age mammals, were discovered at this place in Waco. An ordinary outing for two friends turned out to be a remarkable discovery for science. The place where this occurred has been declared a national monument, offering the public a chance to look back into history.
An extremely rare prehistoric nursery herdIt was not long before the magnitude of the findings became apparent through careful excavations. These were not bones randomly collected over time but, instead, represented a well-preserved death assemblage, a group of animals that perished simultaneously.
According to the National Park Service, the Waco Mammoth Site is unique because it contains the only nursery herd of Columbian mammoths known to have been found anywhere in the United States. A nursery herd is made up of females and juveniles that move around as one tight family. In essence, the formation resembles the tight family groupings that are observed among modern-day elephants.
Roughly 65,000–70,000 years old, the findings provide a glimpse into the life of mammoths and their unexpected demise. In particular, the fossil remains show that there were at least three different ages of mammoths present at the location, including the remains of an adult male, thus allowing for a unique insight into herding habits.

Reconstructing Ice Age behaviourIt would be useful here to note the specifics of the animals themselves to clarify why this discovery is important. The discovered animals were Columbian mammoths, which had their own unique evolutionary branch in North America and were rather different from their well-known woolly relatives. The Columbian mammoths were bigger in size, adjusted to the warm climate, and ruled the southern lands of ancient times.
The presence of a whole nursery herd gives researchers the opportunity to move on from the mere studying of the anatomy of mammoths to studying the behaviour of these magnificent animals as well. The article published in
Genome Biology claims that evolutionary research about the lineages of mammoths and their habitats helps us understand how mammoths were adapting to fast changes taking place around them. Physical aspects of the site help us get information about the movement of the family and how they ended up here.
Of course, the exact cause of such a catastrophe still needs to be researched. However, the remains found show clearly how it all happened – researchers have proposed sudden rising water or flooding, but the exact cause remains debated, of mothers with their calves on this very spot.
The reason for keeping the bones in TexasIn the wake of the discovery, a significant decision was taken which protected the site from any future generation. Instead of excavating the bones and dispersing them in other museums, it was decided by Baylor University employees, along with local volunteers, that the fossils should remain in their location of discovery itself.
The act of conservation of the fossils has helped keep the complete scientific environment intact around the bones. Tourists can visit the site now and peer down into the excavation point, viewing the fossils in the same position as when they were tens of thousands of years old.
