NEW DELHI: In a stunning performance at the Singapore Open on Thursday, rising Indian women's doubles pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated world number two Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea, advancing to the quarterfinals.
The Commonwealth Games bronze medallists secured their victory with scores of 21-9, 14-21, 21-15 in a match lasting nearly an hour.
Ranked 30th in the world, this victory marks the Indian duo's first win against the world number two Korean pair in their three encounters.
Treesa and Gayatri dominated the first game, leading 18-9 before easily taking the game. However, they struggled with unforced errors in the second game, allowing their opponents to level the match.
The decisive third game saw both pairs exchanging powerful smashes, remaining tied at 8-all before Treesa and Gayatri gained a slight edge at the mid-game break.
Demonstrating their aggression, the Indian pair then scored six consecutive points, extending their lead to 16-9 and ultimately securing a memorable victory.
In the men's singles, world number 10 HS Prannoy, who was seeded eighth, faced a challenging match against Japan's Kenta Nishimoto, ranked 11th.
Prannoy lost 13-21, 21-14, 15-21 in a 45-minute battle, marking his fourth defeat against Nishimoto in their six encounters.
