Match Report: Australia tear into Indian attack, gun down 209-run target to take 1-0 lead

India's frailties with the ball were laid bare as Australia gunned down a formidable 209-run target rather comfortably for a four-wicket win in the first T20I on Tuesday. KL Rahul (55 off 35 balls) and Hardik Pandya (71 not out off 30) helped India post a daunting 208 for six after Australia put the hosts in to bat. Australia were dominant in the run chase, romping home in 19.2 overs. Last year's World Cup hero Matthew Wade (45 not out off 21) and Cameron Green (61 off 30) played special knocks to make short work of a stiff target. It was a formidable total but the way Australia started, an early finish was on the cards.

23:07 (IST), Sep, 20

Aaron Finch, the captain of Australia says that it was a good contest. Adds that some really good partnership and good contest with bat and ball. Mentions that when they lose wickets the run rate comes down a bit but the way Matthew Wade and Tim David batted, that was really good. Tells that they love winning and they want to execute their playing style before the World Cup.

23:03 (IST), Sep, 20

Matthew Wade is up for a chat. He says it is a good feeling and credits Tim David for his effort as well. Adds that in this pitch, the required run rate is not a worry as the outfield is very fast and you back yourself to get a couple over the ropes. Mentions that he has worked to hit shots all around the park. Tells that it was always the plan to send Cameron Green to open and says he is a great player and can be a brilliant all rounder for the Australian team. He praised Steven Smith as well.

23:02 (IST), Sep, 20

India had a big score to defend but it was the fielding department that didn't help them. Green, Wade, and Smith, all were dropped once and all three players made some kind of impact. Other than that, poor death-bowling execution kept India at bay. There was a moment at the halfway mark where it felt India will get some momentum but Wade's brilliant innings didn't help it. Apart from Axar Patel, everyone leaked runs. All in all, India dearly missed Jasprit Bumrah.

23:01 (IST), Sep, 20

The way Aaron Finch started the chase (with a six), the intentions were very clear. It was but the blinder from the young, Cameron Green that silenced the crowd. Boy, he played a sumptuous innings of 61 runs off just 30 balls. After his wicket, Australia did get off the track as the middle order failed to make an impact but that is when the deep batting line up came into play for the Aussies. Matthew Wade showed his experience and he along with Tim David's cameo helped them chase the huge score in style. Not to forget, Smith's cameo that helped Aussie keep the required run rate in check. A wonderful chase by Australia and they will be really happy with the start to the series.

That is it from this game! The 2nd T20I is going to be played at Nagpur on 23rd September. The match will start at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). But as always join us early for the build up. Cheers!

23:00 (IST), Sep, 20

Cameron Green wins the Player of the Match for his all-round performance. Green says he was thrown to open the innings but having Aaron Finch at the other end, helped him stay calm. Applauds the innings of Hardik Pandya and says it was a luxury to watch how India batted but that also gave them an idea of how to chase. Shares that he has no idea if he will open the innings further and will leave it up to the coaches to think about that.

22:56 (IST), Sep, 20

It's always nice to get there, especially out in the middle with someone like Finchy. He is an experienced campaigner, he kept me calm. Was coming out to bat at the luxury of watching the Indians bat. Hardik played beautifully, it was a pleasure to watch him. It was kind of good to watch them bat, and that gave us an idea about how to go about while chasing. (Whether he'll continue to bat as an opener) I have no idea, I'll leave it up to the coaches to think about that.

- Player of the Match: Cameron Green (61 off 30 balls; 1/46)

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India says 200 is a big score to defend. Adds that the batters did brilliantly to get to the score but the bowlers were not upto the mark and the fielding did not help as well. Mentions that the dew was not a big factor and credits Australia for the way they batted. Tells that it is a good ground to play and getting 60 runs in the last four overs is gettable. Adds that the plan was to take the wicket of Matthew Wade or Tim David but that did not happen. Ends by saying that they will need to look at themselves and come back stronger in the next game.

22:54 (IST), Sep, 20

It was a good contest, wasn't it? We had some really good partnerships, there were some good contests between the bat and ball. They came hard at us. You expect the run rate to slow down if you lose wickets. The batters tried to change the momentum of the game. That's what we play for, we still try to instil all the processes leading into the World Cup.

- Australia skipper Aaron Finch

22:50 (IST), Sep, 20

I don't think we bowled well. 200 is a good score to defend, and we didn't take our chances in the field. It was a great effort from our batters, but the bowlers were quite not there. There are things we need to look at, but it was a great game for us to understand what went wrong. We know this is a high-scoring ground. You can't relax even if you get 200. We took wickets to an extent, but they played really well. They played some extra-ordinary shots. If I was in that changing room, I would expect to chase that total. You can back yourself to get 60 runs in the final 4 overs. We were not able to take their wicket. That was the turning point, if we would have taken a wicket, things would have been different. You can't score 200 everyday, you need to bat well. Hardik batted really well to get us there. We need to look at our bowling before the next game.

...Presentation coming up...

I would like to make it a habit (of finishing games). It has been a nice 12-18 months, started to put some scores together and put a partnership with Tim David today, he has come down the order with those (finishing) roles. It is nice to get some youth and power like him which gives me time to start. At this ground it didn't worry too much (to get going from the first ball), anywhere between 10-14 runs per over with wickets in hand we could probably chase it down, obviously the guys at the top of order got us off to a great start. If it gets to 13 runs per over early on then there's a bit of panic but towards the end with a wicket like this and outifield like this you kinda back yourself. You have to work where they are going to bowl, they went wide yorkers with a cover and I didn't want to drag it too much to the leg-side and the slower balls I sat a little bit deeper. Often I have four fielders back on the leg-side and I cannot just swing to the leg-side anymore, I need to play some shots on the off-side. Green was always going to open, it was nice to see him come out and do that. He is a really exciting allrounder and he will play a role with the ball as well. There were some crucial roles through that (early) period and Smith played really well to keep the pressure up.

- Matthew Wade (45* off 21; 2x6s, 6x4s)

22:48 (IST), Sep, 20

The visitors have made a mockery of this huge score. A little bit of stutter in the middle phase but other than that, it was an exceptional chase from Australia who go 1-0 up in the three-match series. This is second-highest successful chase by Australia in T20I.

22:47 (IST), Sep, 20

Earlier in the day, India registered their highest ever score against Australia in T20I, thanks to fine innings from Rahul, Pandya and Yadav. In reply, Australia got off to a blistering start. Green took the limelight in the first half of the innings and later it was Wade's match-winning innings that helped Australia get over the line.

22:32 (IST), Sep, 20

It's all over! Australia (211/6 in 19.2 overs) beat India (208/6) by four wickets, lead three-match series 1-0

Pat Cummins hit a four to complete the formality for Australia as they chased down the 209-run target with four balls to spare and four wickets in hand. The victory gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Yuzvendra Chahal removed Tim David (18) off the first ball of the final over, but with just 2 needed it was going only one way from there. Matthew Wade remained unbeaten on 45 off 21 balls.

Yuzvendra Chahal to Tim David, OUT! TAKEN! Tim David tries to finish things off in style but holes out instead. Chahal bowls this short and on off, Tim David tries to loft it over long off, but slices it and fails to get the elevation. The ball goes flat and hard towards Hardik Pandya who takes a nice catch. Still 2 runs needed in 5 balls.
