AUS vs SL highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka beat Australia by 8 wickets to enter Super Eight

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Pathum Nissanka produced a sensational unbeaten century to power Sri Lanka to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Australia in their Group B clash at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The commanding win sealed Sri Lanka’s place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup and left Australia staring at elimination.

Australia will be eliminated if Zimbabwe beat Ireland on Tuesday.

Chasing 182, Sri Lanka rode on Nissanka’s breathtaking 100 not out off just 52 balls, an innings studded with 10 fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 192.31. He anchored the chase to perfection, first stitching a 97-run stand with Kusal Mendis and then finishing the job in style alongside Pavan Rathnayake. The hosts raced to 184/2 in just 18 overs, maintaining a run rate of 10.22.

Earlier, Australia posted a competitive 181 all out in their 20 overs after a blazing start. Skipper Mitchell Marsh (54 off 27) and Travis Head (56 off 29) tore into the Sri Lankan attack during a 104-run opening stand inside nine overs. At 104/0, Australia looked set for a mammoth total.

However, Sri Lanka clawed their way back through Dushan Hemantha, who removed Head and later dismissed Marsh and Glenn Maxwell to finish with impressive figures of 3/37. Dunith Wellalage accounted for Cameron Green, while Dushmantha Chameera chipped in with two crucial wickets, including Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis. From 116/3, Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to capitalise fully on their explosive start, eventually folding for 181.

In response, Sri Lanka suffered an early blow when Kusal Perera fell cheaply, but Nissanka quickly settled into rhythm. Mendis provided solid support with a fluent 51 off 38 balls before falling to Stoinis. By then, the platform had been laid. Rathnayake’s brisk 28 off 15 balls ensured there were no late hiccups as Sri Lanka completed the chase with 12 balls to spare.

First Zimbabwe, and now Sri Lanka — Australia’s campaign has unravelled dramatically. Once favourites, they now face the prospect of an early exit, while Sri Lanka march into the Super Eight with momentum firmly on their side.

Nathan Ellis to Kusal Mendis, AUSTRALIA LOSE A REVIEW! On a back of a length, zoning in on middle and leg, Kusal Mendis tries to whip it across the line, but gets rapped on the front thigh pad. A massive appeal goes around from the Aussies for LBW, but the umpire is unmoved. Mitchell Marsh runs to Ellis and after a chat, sends it upstairs for a review. No bat involved as the replay itself shows a clear gap between the bat and the pad. All the Australian players head back to their fielding spots before the Ball Tracking loads up. It finally comes and shows the ball projected to miss the leg stump. Australia lose one of their two reviews.

Marcus Stoinis to Kusal Perera, OUT! CAUGHT! The Sanath Jayasuriya version of the current generation departs cheaply. A short ball, outside off, there to be hit and Perera does hit it. Goes hard at that, but the extra bounce does him in. The ball hits the higher part of the bat and goes very high in the air. Also, he has to reach out for the ball as well, which reduces the power on the shot. Nathan Ellis is waiting for it patiently at deep point and takes the catch. Stoinis has a look at the batter, as if to give a send off, but Perera is not interested. SRI LANKA ARE 8/1. Equation - 174 RUNS, 112 BALLS!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

20:53 (IST) Feb 16

A big challenge ahead - 181 might look less given the way Australia started off, say, 15-20 short from an Aussie perspective. But by no means is it a stroll in the park while chasing. The highest successful run chase in Pallekele in the T20Is is 177, and this score also is in thereabouts of that figure. Australia cannot afford to lose this game as then it will make their chances very bleak for the Super Eights. A Sri Lanka win will make them get through to the next stage from this group. Be right back with the run chase. Stay tuned.

20:52 (IST) Feb 16

A tug of war in the second half - For Sri Lanka, it was always about who steps up in the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga. With Maheesh Theekshana enduring a rough outing, barring his final over, Dushan Hemantha delivered with a sharp 3 for 37. There were costly lapses though. Josh Inglis dropped on nought and Glenn Maxwell reprieved on 18 made Sri Lanka pay, as both showed their dexterity in patches. Still, to Sri Lanka's credit, they kept chipping away with wickets with Australia slipping from 160/4 to being bowled out on 181. The last three overs went for just 13 runs which extinguished the Aussie hopes of crossing the 200-run mark.

20:51 (IST) Feb 16

You live by the sword, and die by it - A gazillion boundaries later, just when it looked like a total wipeout, Dushan Hemantha flipped the script by removing Head. That one crack opened the floodgates. From domination to disarray, Australia lost their top four in a flash. They kept swinging, but the same aggression turned rogue. Marsh, Head, Tim David and Cameron Green all perished playing the same high-risk tune.

20:50 (IST) Feb 16

Wham, bam, slam to start - Australia's opening woes took a backseat as Mitchell Marsh came out in overdrive, with Travis Head matching that intent ball for ball. The early exit of Matheesha Pathirana due to a hamstring injury only made things worse for Sri Lanka as runs flowed like a broken tap. 70/0 in the Powerplay, and it felt like a boundary buffet. Marsh went full beast mode against Maheesh Theekshana, stitching five fours on the trot and leaving Sri Lanka chasing shadows.

20:47 (IST) Feb 16

Pendulum Pandemonium - After a seesaw of emotions in both the dugouts, it will be the Sri Lankans who will head to the dressing room as the happier of the two sides. They were left mere spectators with 110/2 in the first 10 overs, but they roared back in style, conceding 71/8 in the next ten. Sri Lanka were simply outstanding in the field, giving a good account of themselves in a crucial game. Whereas Australia started off brilliantly, but couldn't get the desired propulsion in the end.

20:42 (IST) Feb 16

Adam Zampa is the last batter in, replacing Xavier Bartlett.

Australia vs Sri Lanka highlights, T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to bowl against Australia in their T20 World Cup match on Monday.

Sri Lanka replaced Kamil Mishara with Kusal Perera, while skipper Mitchell Marsh came back into the Australia XI after missing the side's first two matches, along with Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett.

Pitch and Conditions:

Beautiful clear air, 24 degrees. 66 meters on one side, 68 on the other. 80 meters down the ground. 550 meters above sea level. It's a good pitch. You don't come to SL and expect to see a pitch without turn. Don't ask anymore. It will turn ever so slightly. It's a used pitch. You can see places with wear and tear which are patched up. Good covering of grass. Nice and hard. There's a lot more grass in line with the stumps than outside. There can be slight variable turn or pace on offer. Still think you can play your shots and enjoy yourself on this pitch.

Marsh: All okay, ready to go tonight. It's a big game, every game comes with great responsibility. Weren't at our best last game. Myself, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett come in.

Shanaka: We're going to bowl first. One of the most important games in the comp. One change - Kusal Perera comes in for Mishara.

Teams:

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.

Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (wk), Pavan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka (c), Kamindu Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, Dushan Hemantha, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana.
