Bangladesh vs New Zealand 1st Test Day 5: Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 150 runs

Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 150 runs in the opening Test in Sylhet to grab a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series on Saturday.

Chasing 332 for victory, New Zealand were all out for 181 on the morning session of the final day of the spinner-dominated contest.

Daryl Mitchell scored 58, but it was overall a slipshod batting display by New Zealand, who posted 317 in the first innings.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was pick of the Bangladesh bowlers claiming 6-75.

The final Test begins in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Mehidy Hasan is up for a quick chat. He says that they are definitely in a good position thanks to their bowlers and batters. Adds that the wicket is good, there is some turn but not uneven bounce. Tells they have batted well in both innings. Praises Taijul Islam for his efforts with the ball and says that he is doing this for a long time for Bangladesh. Mentions getting Kane Williamson out twice in one game is an excellent achievement. Ends by saying that, he started Test cricket as a bowler but worked hard on his batting to help his time in these conditions.

On the flip side, New Zealand, despite the slight advantage of the first-innings lead, struggled to counter the probing questions posed by the Bangladesh bowlers. Faced with a challenging target of 331 runs, the New Zealand batting lineup crumbled, losing 7 wickets for just 113 runs in 49 overs by the end of Day 4. Daryl Mitchell, the standout batter and one of the overnight batsmen, will resume his innings on 44 runs, accompanied by Ish Sodhi. The scenario is poised on a knife's edge – will Mitchell conjure a miraculous innings and etch his name in Test cricket history, or will the Bangladesh bowlers secure the remaining 3 wickets to claim a decisive advantage in the series? The answers unfold as we bring you the live action from the final day of this gripping Test match. Stay tuned for what promises to be an enthralling conclusion to the 1st Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh showcased an exemplary batting performance on Day 4, led by their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who marked his captaincy debut with a splendid century. The experienced Mushfiqur Rahim and the resilient Mehidy Hasan contributed with valuable half-centuries, propelling Bangladesh to a second-innings total of 338. In response, the Bangladesh spinners, supported by the lone fast bowler Shoriful Islam, exerted immense pressure on the Kiwi batters, claiming 7 wickets. Taijul Islam, in particular, was the architect of New Zealand's downfall, securing 4 crucial wickets, including the prized scalp of Kane Williamson who fell for Taijul’s arm ball for the second time in this Test match. As we head into the final day, Bangladesh is poised to wrap up the series 1-0, a significant achievement for their new Test skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

... DAY 5, SESSION 1 ...

16:23 (IST) Dec 01

Right then, that is from this riveting Day 4 where Bangladesh have all but confirmed a win here barring a miracle from the Kiwis. The Bangla Tigers will be excited to take the field again and finish the job early in Day 5 which will start at 9 am IST (3.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up. Cheers!

16:22 (IST) Dec 01

New Zealand, on the other started Day 4 well with the ball as they were able to bowl out the hosts before the first hour in the second session with Ajaz Patel being the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. They knew that this target would not be an easy one in this turning track and things got even worse when they lost Tom Latham for no runs on the board in the first over. Kane Williamson also couldn't make much impact in this innings. Except for Daryl Mitchell, none of the batters were able to get going and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Devon Conway worked hard for his 22 but he too gave in under pressure. Mitchell is still unbeaten on 44 but he does not have any recognised batter left on the other end, and will need a extra-ordinary effort with the tail-enders to get something out of this match.

16:20 (IST) Dec 01

Bangladesh already had a healthy lead coming into Day 4 but lost their centurion skipper, Najmul Hossain Shanto quite early. However, Mushfiqur Rahim continued to bat well and converted his start into an excellent half-century. He was dismissed for 67 but Mehidy Hasan showed his batting skills with a fine fifty as well along with the lower order to set up a huge target for their opponents. They looked pumped when they came out to defend this total in the second session and by Tea, already picked up three wickets including the big fish, Kane Williamson. The third session proved to be even more fruitful for them as their spinners exploited the conditions really well and reduced the Kiwis to 83-6. Taijul Islam finished with four wickets and they are well ahead in this game needing only three wickets for the win.

16:19 (IST) Dec 01

Bangladesh have dominated proceedings on Day 4! They showed good cricketing brains while batting and knew that any target above 270 would be difficult on this wicket, they went well past that. The pitch was always going to help the spinners, and that is exactly what happened with Taijul Islam once again leading from the front, they are now very close to defeating New Zealand in a Test at home for the first time in their history.
