NEW DELHI: Indian batting mainstay Virat Kohli has opted to step back from participating in the first two Tests against England, citing personal reasons, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed on Monday.

The decision was communicated by BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a statement, urging fans and media not to engage in speculation about the nature of Kohli's personal situation.

"Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming IDFC First Bank Test series against England, citing personal reasons," stated Jay Shah.

The BCCI emphasized that Kohli had discussed his decision with team captain Rohit Sharma and the broader team management.



Kohli, known for his commitment to representing the country, expressed that certain personal situations necessitate his full attention.

"Virat has spoken to captain Rohit Sharma, the team management, and the selectors and has emphasized that while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention," the BCCI statement added.

The board is expected to announce a replacement for Virat Kohli in the near future.

The five-match series against England is scheduled to commence on January 25 in Hyderabad.
