GG vs UPW, WPL Highlights: Gujarat Giants demolish UP Warriorz with 45-run win

GG vs UPW, WPL Highlights: Sophie Devine’s composed all-round display propelled Gujarat Giants to a dominant 45-run victory over UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League on Thursday, snapping a three-match losing streak. Returning to form, the New Zealand all-rounder anchored Gujarat’s innings with a calm 50 not out off 42 balls, guiding the side to 153/8 after being asked to bat first. Coming into the match after three consecutive low scores, including a duck in her previous game, Devine absorbed pressure with poise, capitalising on a dropped chance and a no-ball to ensure her side posted a competitive total. She finished with three sixes and two fours, smashing a couple off Shikha Pandey in the final over to push the total beyond 150.

UP Warriorz’s chase was derailed early as Kiran Navgire’s poor run continued with a golden duck in the opening over. Skipper Meg Lanning fell for 14 in another stroke of misfortune, leaving the hosts reeling at the powerplay stage. Phoebe Litchfield offered brief resistance, scoring 32, but the innings collapsed once Ashleigh Gardner dismissed her, as wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Harleen Deol and Deepti Sharma also struggled to make an impact, leaving Gujarat in full control.

Gujarat’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, led by veteran left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, who returned 3/16 in her comeback match, removing key middle-order batters in quick succession. Devine contributed with the ball as well, claiming 2/16, while Renuka Singh chipped in with two wickets of her own. Collectively, the Giants bowled UP Warriorz out for 108 in 17.3 overs, showcasing tactical precision and teamwork.

The win not only marked a return to winning ways but also boosted Gujarat Giants to second place in the WPL table behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Devine’s captaincy and all-round brilliance, combined with a disciplined bowling attack, ensured a comprehensive victory and restored confidence in the team’s campaign.

Kashvee Gautam to Meg Lanning, OUT! BOWLED! An unfortunate way to get out. Meg Lanning is gutted. Angled into the right-hander, on a back of a length, Lanning swivels for the pull but the ball skids through to go under the bat. It hits her thigh pad and then the pad before dropping towards the ground but on the way down, it clips the back of the shin and trickles onto the stumps. The Giants are jubilant. The Warriorz are now 2 down for 39, chasing 154.

Renuka Singh Thakur to Kiran Navgire, OUT! STUMPED! That is one of the unluckiest ways to get out. Nothing seems to be going right for Kiran Navgire this season, and she has to go back without troubling the scorers. Renuka Singh Thakur bowls this full but angling down the leg side. Navgire looks clip it away but misses and her head falls over. She loses her balance and steps out of the crease. The ball hits the keeper, Beth Mooney's left pad, deflects onto her right boot and rolls onto the stumps. The replay shows that Navgire is out of her crease when the stumps are broken. She cannot believe her luck but has to make the walk to the hut. UP Warriorz are 2/1, chasing 154 runs.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

21:17 (IST) Jan 22

Kranti Gaud set the tone early with a couple of wickets, and Meg Lanning backed her by bowling four straight overs at the start, as she was almost unplayable, finishing with impressive figures of 2/18. The spinners then tightened the screws in the middle overs, with Deepti Sharma removing the big wicket of Gardner, although she did not complete her spell. Sophie Ecclestone picked up a couple while staying economical, and Chloe Tryon chipped in as well. However, Shikha Pandey had an off day, conceding over 50 runs in her four overs, and whether that proves costly or not remains to be seen. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

21:13 (IST) Jan 22

Sophie Ecclestone is in for a chat. She says that they spent a long time in the middle, around an hour and 40 minutes, and a lot happened during that time. She feels they did well to restrict the Giants to 153 and backs her batters to get the job done in the chase. Ecclestone adds that the pitch stayed quite low, and she felt bowling into the wicket was the way to go. She notes that the dew has set in and conditions are now quite wet, which could make things harder for the bowlers in the second innings.

21:13 (IST) Jan 22

However, Sophie Devine lived a charmed life, with fielders putting down chances, a missed run-out, and even being dismissed off a No Ball. She made full use of those reprieves, scoring an unbeaten half-century to at least give her bowlers something to defend. But it will not be easy with the dewy conditions, and they will have to make early inroads to put pressure on UPW.

21:12 (IST) Jan 22

Despite losing Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Anushka Sharma for identical scores, both once again failing to make the most of their starts, Beth Mooney held the innings together. She registered her best score of the season with a 38 off 34, but would have liked to push on further. The bigger issue for them was the lack of meaningful partnerships, as wickets kept falling at regular intervals, including skipper Ashleigh Gardner, who failed to make an impact, which hurt them badly.

21:08 (IST) Jan 22

Sophie Devine’s late burst has pushed Gujarat Giants past the 150 mark, with a 16-run final over that could prove crucial in swinging the momentum their way. That said, UP Warriorz would probably be happy with this total if asked at the toss, especially after a solid all-round bowling effort. With the dew expected to play a role, they will still fancy their chances in the chase.

GG vs UPW, WPL Highlights: Sophie Devine’s return to form anchored a commanding all-round performance as Gujarat Giants snapped their three-match losing streak with a clinical 45-run win over UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League on Thursday. Devine’s calm, unbeaten half-century laid the foundation before a disciplined bowling effort dismantled the Warriorz for just 108 in 17.3 overs.

Asked to bat first, Gujarat were rocked early but Devine steadied the innings with a composed 50 not out off 42 balls, guiding her side to 153 for 8. Coming into the match after three successive single-digit scores, the New Zealand veteran absorbed pressure smartly, capitalising on a dropped chance and a no-ball to finish strongly. Her late assault, including two sixes in the final over, pushed Gujarat beyond the 150-mark after a sluggish middle phase.

UP Warriorz’s chase never found momentum. Kiran Navgire’s struggles continued with a golden duck, while skipper Meg Lanning fell for 14 as early wickets left the hosts on the back foot. Phoebe Litchfield offered brief resistance with 32, but once Ashleigh Gardner dismissed her, the innings unravelled quickly.

Veteran left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the standout with 3 for 16 on her comeback, triggering a collapse in the middle overs. Devine and Renuka Singh chipped in with two wickets apiece as Gujarat’s bowlers hunted in pairs, suffocating any hopes of a recovery. Devine capped her night by dismissing Sophie Ecclestone, effectively sealing the contest.

The win lifted Gujarat Giants to second place on the table behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru, underlining a timely return to form driven by leadership, experience and collective discipline.
