Their last encounter was in the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York, where India edged out Pakistan in a thrilling low-scoring match, securing a six-run victory.

As anticipation builds for the blockbuster clash, former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has backed India as the favourites heading into the contest.

"If we talk about match-winners, I'd say that India has more match-winners compared to Pakistan. A match-winner is someone who knows how to win the game single-handedly. Right now, we don’t have such players in Pakistan," Afridi said on a special episode of JioHotstar’s Greatest Rivalry Returns.

"India's strength lies in its middle and lower order, which has been winning them matches. For a long time, we have been giving opportunities to players, but no one has stepped up consistently. Some have performed in a few games, but we don’t have players who have sustained their performance for a year, two years, or across 50-60 matches. That’s where we are a little weaker compared to India, which is very strong in this area. But the key to winning against India is collective performance—whether it's the batsmen, bowlers, or spinners—everyone’s contribution is crucial," he said.

Pakistan also suffered a huge blow as their star batter Fakhar Zaman suffered the injury while fielding during Pakistan’s tournament opener against New Zealand. He was ruled out of the tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved Imam-ul-Haq as Fakhar’s replacement in Pakistan’s squad.

Afridi said skipper Mohammad Rizwan needs to set an example for others.

"As a captain, Rizwan has to set an example for others—that is very important. He must perform in every game, and his attitude, body language, and leadership matter a lot. Being a captain comes with equal amounts of praise and criticism. His performance will be crucial, as he is the glue that holds the team together. He treats everyone equally, he is a fighter, and his energy on the field is infectious. I have seen him step up in big matches, and I am confident he will lead the team well,” Afridi said.

Virat Gets To His 50 :I was listening to sunny Gavaskar talking about Virat trying to hold the ball with his hand when there was no one behind. He could have run a single, opined Sunny. Sunny didn't seem bothered about Virat might have been trying to keep him out of harm's way. The thought didn't seem to register with Sunny! Ramiz Raja, the other commentator, supported him by telling 'and here I was raving about his game awareness!'I thought how easy it was for Sunny to influence other people. I also thought that Virat must have done something to get such vehement reactions from Sunny almost every time he goes out to play for the last so many years!Sunny Gavaskar, and it is hard for me to believe that there was a time not so long ago when I idolised him! He most probably believes that he is the greatest Indian batter ever, that he was the one who faced the most fearsome pace bowlers of the world, that no one in India can hold a candle to him - Neither Virat Kohli, nor Sachin Tendulkar! As long as Sunny was commenting, I never heard him utter one single word of praise in favour of Kohli! It was always "How could Virat play a shot like this! How could he played a shot like that?"And every time Rohit fails, Sunny's attacks become more scathing on Virat Kohli! It's not enough for Sunny and his trusted comrades like Sanjay Manjrekar and such detractors to make sure that Virat lost his touch, his confidence and so on altogether. They were hell-bent on destroying Virat for good! But Sorry Sunny, as a One-day player, as a T-20 cricketer, Virat stands miles ahead of you. Accept it and pray to God at least for once so that Virat can break your test records as well.
