'It takes a lot of character': Gautam Gambhir backs Rinku Singh in emotional Team India huddle - Watch
NEW DELHI: India head coach Gautam Gambhir had special words for Rinku Singh ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final against England at Wankhede Stadium. But before talking tactics, Gambhir spoke from the heart.
Rinku had just lost his father, Khanchand, who passed away after battling liver cancer. He was admitted to Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida and was on ventilator support before he died early Friday morning.
Rinku immediately left the team to be with his family and perform the last rites. Despite the personal tragedy, he rejoined the squad the very next day.
Addressing the team, Gambhir said, “Guys, before I start, Rinku, it takes a lot of character to come and join the team. Remember one thing, you are not alone. The whole team is standing next to you during this hour, so stay strong.”

Although he returned before the Super 8 match against West Indies, Rinku was not included in the playing XI, with Sanju Samson keeping his spot. He had also missed the earlier match against Zimbabwe.
On the field, it hasn’t been the best tournament for him. Added to the World Cup squad at the last moment, Rinku has scored 24 runs in five innings, including a duck against South Africa. His record against England is also modest, 39 runs in three matches against the Harry Brook-led side.
But for now, cricket has taken a backseat, as the team rallies around a grieving teammate.
