Women’s T20 World Cup: South Africa team to wear jerseys embroidered with names of family and friends

NEW DELHI: In a heartwarming display of gratitude, the South African women's cricket team will be wearing jerseys with the names of their loved ones and close friends embroidered on them during the Women's T20 World Cup.

This unique gesture, as stated by Cricket South Africa, will serve as a tangible reminder of home for the players, even amidst the intense competition, and acknowledge the unwavering support they receive from their families, friends, and the entire nation.

Laura Wolvaardt, the skipper and opening batter who will be leading South Africa in an ICC event for the first time, expressed her feelings, saying, "Carrying a piece of home with me during the tournament gives me strength. I know I'm not alone out there; my loved ones are with me in spirit."


The players' shirts will feature the names of one to five individuals who hold a special place in their lives, embroidered on the inside of their shirt collars and bottom hems.

Sinalo Jafta, the wicketkeeper-batter, will pay tribute to her mom and Counsellor, stating, "It's such a special touch. When I look down and see the names of those most important to me, it reminds me to always give my best and remember those who have been there for me from day one."

Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba also shared her thoughts on this initiative, saying, "It is so special to be able to honour those who have been with us on our playing journey. We also play for them."

South Africa, who secured the runner-up position in the 2023 edition of the tournament on home soil, are placed in Group B for the upcoming World Cup. They will commence their campaign against the 2016 champions, West Indies, in Dubai on Friday, followed by a match against the 2009 winners, England, in Sharjah. The team will then return to Dubai to face Scotland and Bangladesh in their remaining group stage matches.
