NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka has been penalised with a 10 percent deduction from their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in their ICC World Cup opener against South Africa in New Delhi on Saturday.

Match referee Javagal Srinath imposed this penalty after Dasun Shanaka's team was found to be two overs behind the required rate during Saturday's match, accounting for time allowances.

In line with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, pertaining to minimum over-rate violations, players are fined five percent of their match fees for each over their team fails to bowl within the designated time frame.

Shanaka admitted to the violation and accepted the proposed penalty, obviating the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was brought by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Shahid Saikat, supported by third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Alex Wharf.
