What is Australia’s record in Day-Night Test matches?

The Test format was seeing a decline in its following due to the increasing popularity of the T20s. The International Cricket Council (ICC) thought of bringing in some changes to the Tests to restore the fans’ interest in cricket’s "purest format" and came up with the innovation of the day-night Test matches.

The day-night Tests begin in the afternoon and end late in the evening. Due to the visibility factor under floodlights, a pink ball is be used instead of the red ball.



Australia played their first-ever day-night Test match against New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval in 2015. They won that game by three wickets.

Since playing their first day-night Test match, Australia’s record in the pink-ball Tests has been very good. Out of 12 day-night Tests that they have played, they have won 11, with the one loss coming against the West Indies in January 2024 at the Gabba.

Incidentally, the biggest victory for the Aussies in a day-night fixture came against the West Indies in 2022 by a margin of 419 runs.

Australia have played the most day-night Test matches, being a part of 12 out of 22 games so far. The Adelaide Oval Cricket Ground has hosted the most day-night Tests with seven matches so far.



The Aussies beat India in the only day-night Test between the two teams in December 2020, bowling the Indians out for just 36 runs in the second innings.

Australia are set to face India once again in a day-night Test match on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval.
