Ben Stokes put in a stunning shift at Old Trafford on Thursday, producing an impeccable bowling display to register his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket since 2017. The England captain led from the front in the fourth Test against India, claiming 5 for 72 in 24 overs to dismantle the visitors' middle and lower order across two days of play in Manchester.
Stokes struck first on Day 1 with a crucial blow, trapping India captain Shubman Gill lbw for 12 with a delivery that nipped back in sharply. He followed it up with the wicket of a well-set Sai Sudharsan, who had fought his way to a patient 61 before Brydon Carse caught him out.

He removed Shardul Thakur, forcing a shot that was safely pouched by Ben Duckett. In the 110th over, Stokes delivered the knockout punch as he dismissed Washington Sundar and debutant Anshul Kamboj within three balls.
Kamboj’s dismissal sealed Stokes' milestone. His delivery took the faintest edge and was caught cleanly by keeper Jamie Smith. The scalp brought up Stokes’ fifth five-wicket haul in Tests, and his first in over eight years, with his last coming at Lord’s in 2017 against the West Indies.
Furthermore, Stokes became the first England captain to claim a five-wicket haul in a home Test since Bob Willis achieved the feat with figures of 5/35 against New Zealand at Leeds in 1983. The only other instance of an England skipper taking a five-for in the years in between came away from home, when Joe Root returned remarkable figures of 5/8 against India in Ahmedabad in 2021.
The 34-year-old’s fiery spell underscored his importance to the England side, not just as a leader, but as a bowler capable of game-changing spells. It was also a continuation of his stellar form with the ball from the previous Test.
India were eventually bowled out for 358 in 114.1 overs, with Stokes clearly the standout performer for England.
For a man whose bowling duties have often been reduced in recent years due to injuries, Stokes’ five-for was a timely reminder that when fit, he remains England’s ultimate all-format warrior.
