This was Jaiswal’s third century against England, having scored two tons in the home series last year, where he finished as the leading run-scorer. He has now firmly established himself as a thorn in England’s plans, seamlessly adapting to conditions both at home and away.
On a sun-drenched day in Leeds, Jaiswal combined aggression with patience, capitalising on a solid start with KL Rahul (42) as the duo added 91 for the opening wicket. His current partnership with captain Shubman Gill, who also scored a fluent half-century, set the tone for a promising Indian innings in what marks the beginning of a new era in Indian Test cricket.
Jaiswal has developed a remarkable habit of delivering in overseas conditions, especially in opening Tests of marquee series. He announced himself in Test cricket with a sublime century on debut during the first Test against the West Indies in Dominica in July 2023. He followed it up with another memorable ton in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 in Perth, scoring a fighting hundred on a challenging pitch.
Now, continuing that trend, Jaiswal has added another feather to his cap by notching up a century in the first Test of the England tour at Headingley in 2025. Each of these innings underlines his ability to adapt quickly, handle pressure, and seize the moment — hallmark traits of a future great.
Jaiswal’s hundred was not just another milestone, but a statement of intent as Team India rebuilds its Test batting unit following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
