India tour of England: Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy launch postponed; out of respect for Ahmedabad plane crash victims
The much-anticipated launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the newly named prize for India-England Test series in England, has been postponed in light of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. Originally scheduled for Saturday, June 14, on the sidelines of the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, the naming ceremony was called off out of respect for the victims of the aviation disaster.

Over 275 lives were lost, including passengers and crew aboard the AI-171 Air India flight that crashed near Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday — one of the deadliest air disasters in Indian history. In response, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) jointly decided to defer the event.
"Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect," a senior ECB official told Cricbuzz. Both boards are now looking at a flexible timeline for the ceremony. Invitations had reportedly been extended to both James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar — the legends after whom the trophy is named — for the event.
The new trophy replaces the Pataudi Trophy, which had been awarded to the winners of England-India Test series in England since 2007. However, following a request from BCCI, ICC Chairman Jay Shah, and Tendulkar himself, the ECB is now reconsidering how to retain the Pataudi legacy in some form.
"Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series," the ECB official confirmed, hinting that a medallion named after the late MAK Pataudi may be introduced and awarded to the winning captain.
