... THE RUN CHASE ...
Surface with something for everyone - As they say, if it seams, it spins, and that has certainly been the case today at Allan Border Field. Even as the ball got older, it continued to do a bit off the seam, and Alana King, with her control, managed to extract handy purchase from the surface. The extra bounce is something Australia will have to contend with in their chase. They would be better served looking to play down the ground, as several of the Indian dismissals came from batters playing square of the wicket. All the ingredients of an intriguing chase are in place. Stick around.
A brief revival, but Australia close the door - India did find some stability through a vital 53-run stand between Harmanpreet Kaur and Kashvee Gautam that briefly raised hopes of pushing towards 250, but Australia struck again by dismissing Kaur at a crucial juncture. That left Kashvee Gautam battling with the tail. She did not quite get the desired support, and in hindsight, Gautam could have managed the situation better by farming the strike more effectively. If not for the dropped catch by Tahlia McGrath when Gautam was on 17, Australia might have managed to keep India under 200.
From edges to elegance - Smriti Mandhana began in scratchy fashion, with a few edgy boundaries that could so easily have gone to hand, but she survived that testing phase. Mandhana grew in confidence and got a partnership going with Harmanpreet Kaur, but the hosts were able to nip the threat of the stand in the bud at just the right time. They were able to apply the squeeze from there and pick up a couple of wickets along the way to reduce India to 140/6.
Early blows rocked India - Despite there being a bit of cloud cover, Harmanpreet Kaur opted to bat first. India were rocked early by the Aussie new ball attack, who made full use of the swing and seam on offer to ask all the right questions of the top order. Jemimah Rodrigues could not do much either.
A disciplined and well-rounded bowling effort - A job well done from Australia. They never allowed India to get on top, and whenever the visitors threatened to build momentum, the hosts struck back and wrested control of the proceedings.
