Abhishek Sharma on brink of world record: Just 39 runs away from T20I history
Abhishek Sharma is on the verge of making history when India take on Australia in the fourth T20I at Carrara Oval in Queensland on Thursday, November 6. The world’s No. 1 T20I batter will open the innings for India and could break one of the biggest records in the format.
The 25-year-old from Punjab needs just 39 runs in less than 68 balls to become the fastest batter in the world, in terms of balls faced, to reach 1000 runs in T20 internationals.
Abhishek, who made his T20I debut for India in July last year against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club, currently has 961 runs from 500 balls. The current record belongs to Australia’s Tim David, who recently completed 1000 runs during his blistering 74 off 38 balls in Hobart on November 2. David reached the milestone in 569 balls.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav holds second place, having taken 573 balls to reach 1000 runs, while New Zealand’s Finn Allen sits third with 611 balls.
Abhishek also has a chance to break another record. If he scores the required runs, he could become the fastest Indian in terms of matches to reach 1000 runs in T20Is. At present, Virat Kohli holds that record, having reached the mark in 27 innings from 29 matches. Abhishek has batted 26 times in 27 games so far.
Globally, the record for being the fastest to 1000 T20I runs (in terms of matches) is shared by former England batter Dawid Malan and the Czech Republic’s Sabawoon Davizi, both achieving it in their 24th match.
Alongside Abhishek, Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson will also be eyeing the 1000-run milestone in the upcoming clash. Tilak is just nine runs short, sitting on 991 from 32 matches, while Samson needs five more, having scored 995 runs in 51 T20Is so far.
