Star batter Shubman Gill endured another disappointing outing as Punjab crumbled against Saurashtra’s spin attack, suffering a crushing 194-run defeat on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group B clash on Friday.
Set an imposing target of 320 on a challenging surface, Gill—Punjab’s biggest hope of pulling off a turnaround—managed just 14 off 32 balls as the visitors were bowled out for 125 in their second innings. His struggles continued after a first-innings duck, where he was dismissed without scoring off just two deliveries.
Gill fell victim to left-arm spinner Parth Bhut in both innings, with the spinner completing a superb 10-wicket match haul. Bhut followed up his first-innings figures of 5 for 33 with an even more devastating spell on Day 2, claiming 5 for 8 from 10 overs.
Spin dominated the contest throughout, with as many as 23 wickets falling on the opening day and another 17 batters dismissed on the second.
Bhut was well supported by fellow spinner Dharmendra Jadeja, who returned figures of 5 for 55, as Punjab’s batting lineup failed to put up any meaningful resistance. Uday Saharan was the lone bright spot, top-scoring with 31 off 71 balls.
Earlier, Saurashtra, resuming their second innings at 24 for three, recovered well to post 286. From a precarious 75 for five and a lead of just 108 runs, the lower-order batters mounted a crucial fightback.
Prerak Mankad led the charge with a quickfire 56 off 41 balls. India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with 46 off 44 deliveries, while Bhut added an unbeaten 37 and Hetvik Kotak contributed a brisk 39 off 39 balls.
With the emphatic win, Saurashtra moved to 18 points from six matches, while Punjab remained on 11 points after six games.
India have played just one T20I at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, beating Australia by 20 runs in 2023.
The pitch at the venue has historically assisted spinners, who have enjoyed greater success than seamers.
In the only match played there, spinners claimed wickets at an average of 18.16 and conceded just 6.41 runs per over, while pacers went at 9.17 an over.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has dismissed the perception that he enjoys “unlimited authority” in team selection, saying he is amused by narratives that pit him “against his own” after Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described his role as the “hardest job after the Prime Minister’s”.
An avid cricket follower, Tharoor shared a selfie with Gambhir ahead of the first T20I against New Zealand in Nagpur, praising the former India opener for the composure and resolve he has shown despite constant scrutiny.
"In Nagpur, enjoyed a good & frank discussion with my old friend @GautamGambhir, the man with the hardest job in India after the PM's! He is being second-guessed by millions daily but stays calm & walks on undaunted. A word of appreciation for his quiet determination and able leadership. Wishing him all success - starting today!" Tharoor tweeted.
Gambhir responded later, briefly addressing the chatter that has followed his tenure.
"Thanks a lot Dr @ShashiTharoor! When the dust settles, truth & logic about a coach's supposedly "unlimited authority" will become clear. Till then I'm amused at being pitted against my own who are the very best!" Gambhir wrote on 'X'.
Since Gambhir took charge of the Indian team, the side has undergone sweeping changes across formats. From the appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain to the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, Indian cricket has been in a phase of transition.
Shubman Gill was also named captain of the Test and ODI sides during this period.
At the same time, speculation has continued around Gambhir’s relationship with senior players such as Kohli and Rohit, both of whom now feature only in ODIs after stepping away from Tests and T20Is.
Gambhir has also faced criticism following India’s recent struggles in home Tests, including whitewash series defeats to New Zealand and South Africa.
