IPL 2025 Auction Highlights: CSK, MI projected XI after teams finalise squads

IPL 2025 Mega Auction Live: Bihar's Vaibhav Suryavanshi, at 13 years, became the youngest ever player to be picked by an IPL franchise while out-of-favour India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar fetched a winning bid of Rs 10.75 crore from Royal Challengers Bengaluru on a largely predictable second day of the mega auction on Monday.

Suryavanshi went to Rajasthan Royals for Rs 1.10 crore. Suryavanshi, talked about as a prodigy, made his T20 debut for Bihar in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Rajasthan on Saturday and scored a 6-ball 13 before falling to Deepak Chahar.

Suryavanshi made headlines recently when he became the youngest batter to score an international century, achieving the feat in a Youth Test for India Under-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai. He smashed 104 off 62 balls in that match.

Ajinkya Rahane, who had gone unsold earlier in the day, returned to the auction and to the Kolkata Knight Riders' camp for Rs 1.50 crore.

However, the Mumbai duo of Shardul Thakur and Prithvi Shaw along with New Zealand stars Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips were among the unsold players.

But before the youngster sprang a surprise, lesser-fancied Indian fast bowlers hit pay dirt.

Out of national reckoning for more than two years, Bhuvneshwar's experience was in demand among the IPL franchises earlier in the day.

Bhuvneshwar, who will be 35 before the start of next IPL, has 300 wickets from 287 career T20 games and an economy rate of less than eight. But he last played for India during a tour of New Zealand in November 2022 and is considered well past his prime at the international level.

However, with at least three Indian pacers needed per team, the pool is not large enough to ensure equal distribution among the 10 teams.

Therefore, an out-of-favour Bhuvneshwar, an injury-prone Deepak Chahar (Rs 9.25 crore for Mumbai Indians) and a Test reserve Mukesh Kumar (Rs 8 crore RTM by Delhi Capitals) got good deals on the second day when franchises came with leaner purse after splurging on Sunday.

Akash Deep, the Test pacer, got a Rs 8 crore deal from Lucknow Super Giants.

What works for Chahar and Bhuvneshwar is their ability to swing the white ball in Powerplays. Mukesh has takers for his wide yorkers at the death.

Even a Tushar Deshpande, who has an economy rate of close to 10 runs per over, was snapped by Rajasthan Royals at Rs 6.50 crore. He is currently recuperating from an ankle operation.

Former RCB skipper Faf du Plessis became the biggest bargain buy for Delhi Capitals at a base price of Rs two crore while Gujarat Titans were smart to lap up India all-rounder Washington Sundar for Rs 3.20 crore.

The paucity of good seam bowling Indian all-rounders in the auction list allowed South African Marco Jansen to laugh his way to the bank with a Rs seven crore deal from Punjab Kings.

Englishman Sam Curran, who had once attracted a Rs 18 crore bid, only had a couple of takers with CSK bringing him back home at Rs 2.40 crore.

Shardul, Shaw and Rahane can come back for the accelerated auction if the franchises pick them for it.

For Rahane, it wasn't surprising as his form dipped alarmingly during his second season with CSK and during the ongoing domestic season, he has managed to hold his Mumbai spot due to his role of skipper.

In case of Shardul, it is the 'Impact Player' rule that became his undoing as neither his batting has the requisite firepower for T20 cricket nor does his seam bowling, with a T20I economy rate of 9.15, inspires confidence.

For Shaw, massive weight gain and fitness issues along with off-the-field drama has not exactly enhanced his reputation.

Among the three, only Shaw still has a chance to find some takers at the end because of his explosive Powerplay game. But his struggle against quality pace is well-documented.

Hardik Pandya's brother Krunal Pandya got a Rs 5.75 crore deal from RCB who needed an experienced spin bowling all-rounder.

Nitish Rana, who had once breached the million dollar mark as an uncapped player, got a Rs 4.20 crore winning bid from Rajasthan Royals.

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Mumbai Indians approach
Mumbai Indians bought only four plays on the opening day of the auction and waited until the sixth set to outbid rest of the pack. They signed only one overseas player, their only so far in the squad, on Sunday. They have nine players in their squad as things stand so they need to bring in at least nine.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene said MI were always going to be patient.

"When we saw the list of players, that it’s two halves to this auction. So we knew that if we’re doing this route, we have to be patient. There’s another 400 or more players on the list. So we could pick and choose and there’s a lot of talent that we’re going to pick wisely.

"At the end of the day, the auction is not just for the players that are in the auction and the purses that we have, it’s to the players that we retain, the value that we put into those players. To be in that situation where we are in the top 3 in purses going into day 2 and at the same time we secured nine slots in our playing XI that gives us a lot of comfort in how we want to execute."

Faf du Plessis will be involved in the auction today. He is in the first set of the day and played in the Abu Dhabi T10 league where he's leading the run charts. Du Plessis is unsure if he will find a team in the IPL.

I don't think my name has come up yet. So let's see. I mean, there's a lot of batters already been picked up. So let's see what happen."

IPL Auction 2025 Live: RR's Rahul Dravid on the signings so far, strategy and looking ahead to Day 2
Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid spoke after Day 1 of the IPL auction as the team signed Jofra Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Akash Madhwal, Kumar Kartikeya.

On the signings so far:

"It's been an interesting day. We're pretty pleased with where we're at. Via the retentions, we already had a strong batting core. With the addition of some outstanding bowlers, we feel we've made significant progress towards building a side that can compete for the title next season. We're particularly excited about welcoming back Jofra to our fold. We feel he gives a nice balance to the squad both in the powerplay and at the death.

Strategy at the Auction:

"With our batting core in place already, our priority today was to build a strong bowling unit, which we've been able to do to an extent with the addition of Archer, Theekshana, Hasaranga, Madhwal and Kartikeya. Our focus was always on having a world-class XI, which is visible in the way we have gone about our business as we tried to utilize the majority of our funds on the starting XI. We feel we've secured some amazing buys and I'm looking forward to seeing them in pink."

Looking ahead to Day 2

"Day 2 will be crucial as we still have a few key spots to fill. Our focus remains the same, building a side that is strong enough to compete for the title next season. We have our targets in our mind who we feel will help us compete next season. Hopefully we should be able to secure them!"

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Venkatesh Iyer reacts to his big money signing
KKR brought back Venkatesh Iyer for Rs 23.75 crore during the auction on Day 1. He said on JioCinema, “I'm really happy. The MP team is here with me, and they're all very happy for me. They're enjoying the occasion, Avesh Khan also got sold to LSG. The most important thing is that I'm going back to KKR, so I'm more excited about that.”

On joining KKR: “The coach of KKR was with me here, he's the coach of MP as well. So, we were discussing, and I was kind of on his nerve, asking him to take me back to KKR. I understand that winning championships is extremely important, but so is player development and backing the players, and when the team management does that, it kind of shows how much it values their players. So, I think, it's a pleasure to be playing for KKR once again and I'm extremely happy that they've shown so much confidence in me.”

On his prospects of being the KKR captain: “Last year, I was the captain in the absence of Nitish Rana when he was unfortunately injured. So, I was the vice-captain and I always believe, captaincy is a tag, but you can always be a leader in a group. I believe in taking all the boys together, creating an environment where everyone feels motivated to play for the team. Eoin Morgan was the captain in 2021, and I was new, but he would come up to me and tell me that we can do this, we can do that. So, I feel that is leadership, and if given the responsibility, I'd be more than happy to do it.”

On his efforts to enhance his bowling: “I have worked on my bowling. I've always wanted to contribute in multiple facets of the game, with the bat and ball, in the field, and in terms of suggestions that I can give to the coach or the captain. So, that keeps me going and that is what I feel makes me a utility player. Sometimes, it might happen with the bat or just with the ball, but either way if you're always involved in the planning and strategies, then I feel you're very important for the team.”

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Uthappa on Ashwin joining CSK
Robin Uthappa was happy with CSK’s decision to get Ashwin back: “I think Ashwin has proven over a period of his career that he's a lateral thinker. He's not linear in his thinking, and he's always thinking out of the box. So, you always want a person like that in your side. As a captain, as a leader, you want to have as many options as possible. With the likes of Ashwin, Ruturaj will get those suggestions and he can be used as a floater, and he can bat up the order to play the role of a pinch hitter as well. He may not be the highest wicket taker, but he is pretty economical.”
12:36 (IST) Nov 25
IPL Auction 2025 Live: R Ashwin returns to CSK for Rs 9.75 crore
CSK edged Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a four-way bidding war for Ashwin. Fleming called it a "homecoming".

"It's a bit of a homecoming for Ashwin, but he's a world-class bowler," Fleming said. "It's not so much the price - you look at how someone fits in, and there's an emotional attachment for Ashwin with Chennai, so it's a nice fit. He has still got a very good skillset; his numbers are fantastic. He's obviously towards the latter part of his career, but the experience he brings, he's handy with the bat, and we think we can use him in a number of ways.

"The Noor Ahmad pick was looking more at the middle [overs] to attack. So if we do get turning conditions, then we've got an opportunity to keep taking wickets. We've got [Matheesha] Pathirana at the end, which is the death aspect.

"We've just identified that the way the game is going, your bowling has to be really specific, and you have to take wickets to slow teams down. And if you're just trying to contain, then some of the hitting power of players these days will just take the game away from you. So we've tried to be smart with our options given our retained players and add some variation, which maybe we lacked a little bit last year."

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Robin Uthappa on RCB's approach
Robin Uthappa was left baffled with RCB’s passive approach in the auction: “I’m confused. I don’t understand how you have the second-highest purse in a mega auction and have made only one pick in the first two marquee sets. With fans backing you year after year, putting their emotions and hearts on the line, turning up to support the side — I’m certain they’ll feel let down. As a fan and former player of RCB, I feel like they’ve missed a trick here. I just wonder where they’re heading because they haven’t gone after Mitchell Starc, KL Rahul, or Rishabh Pant. I feel they should’ve gone for Rishabh Pant; he’s a two-skill player. With that kind of purse, they could’ve gone up to 23 crores for one of those players, but they didn’t even go that far.”

IPL Auction 2025 Live: With biggest purse, Punjab were the most aggressive on Day 1
The Punjab Kings were expectedly the most aggressive buyer in the auction on the opening day in Jeddah, as they went in with the biggest remaining purse of Rs 110.50 crore crore. They bought eight players for Rs 88 crore.

The first day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw most of the high-profile names raking in the moolah as the 10 franchises virtually emptied their pockets on Sunday to bag the priority players in their respective shortlist.

Led by Rs 27 crore Lucknow Super Giants spent to buy star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, the sum of money splurged by the franchises came to a whopping Rs 467.95 crore.

A total of 84 players from the roster of 577 were presented on the opening day of the two-day auction at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah. Out of these 68 got sold, while four were retained through the Right-to-Match card.

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Mitchell Starc sees drop in value
At the other end of the spectrum, Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player last season at Rs 24.75 crore, was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 11.75 crore.

"Starc is a match-winner, he is a wicket-taker and we couldn't be happier. And with KL Rahul, again somebody who we believe is a bankable player, will give you runs each season," said DC head coach Hemang Badani.

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Eoin Morgan on Chahal
Former England captain Eoin Morgan on PBKS acquiring Yuzvendra Chahal for Rs 18 crore: “We talked a lot about the high price of top elite players when it comes to the mega auctions. Obviously, eyes are on the prize when it comes to Indian players as well, but he sits in that top echelon of quality wrist spinners. He has proven over the course of his career that he can bowl in all phases of the game, and he is a prized wicket-taker."
09:27 (IST) Nov 25
IPL Auction 2025 Live: Chahal to PBKS for Rs 18 crore
Among the second set of players, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal drew a winning bid of Rs 18 crore from Punjab Kings. Chahal, who was dropped from the Indian team despite not getting a game in its victorious T20 World Cup campaign, was released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the mega auction. However, his latest price tag suggests he remains a sought after player in the IPL.

Chahal has taken 205 wickets in the IPL and remains a much sought-after property, as his price tag suggests.

Expressing his excitement to join Punjab Kings squad, Chahal told Jio Cinema, “I have a great bond with Shreyas and Arshdeep and I am looking forward to playing with them. At the same time, I will get to learn a lot from Ricky Ponting. Let’s focus on winning the trophy Go Punjab.”

Ponting also explained the reasoning behind going for Chahal: “Yuzi is the highest quality Indian spinner in the auction, so, we wanted to fill certain gaps with the best players we possibly could. And yes, we spent a bit of money to get there, but what we're trying to do is rebuild this franchise basically from the ground up and you can't do that without the best players."
09:23 (IST) Nov 25
IPL Auction 2025 Live: Arshdeep went to PBKS for Rs 18 crore as first player sold
First player out of the bag to get the IPL 2025 auction underway was left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh. PBKS used their RTM Card to retain his services for the 2025 and beyond season(s).

“I am very happy to be back in Punjab. I hope we win the trophy this year,” said Arshdeep.

While talking about getting back Arshdeep, Ponting said, “We had certain targets coming into the auction as every team does. Arshdeep was obviously the first one. He's been in our franchise for a number of years. I was really keen to get him back. Left-arm fast bowler, obviously, with a great skill set with the new ball and the old ball and, you know, one of India's leading wicket-takers in T20 cricket. Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting said on Shreyas Iyer, who he had spent time with during their years at Delhi Capitals: “I think we knew Shreyas, Pant and KL Rahul were going to attract big money. I wanted to work with Shreyas. I've worked with him before and he is a great guy and a great player. He'll be a great leader for our team if we decide to go that way, which I'm pretty sure we probably will. And obviously, he was the championship-winning captain last year. So there are lots of great things about bringing him to Punjab.”

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Day 1 quick recap
The 10 franchises spent the most on Rishabh Pant on the opening day of the IPL mega auction with Shreyas Iyer briefly becoming the most expensive player in IPL history. Not long after, Lucknow Super Giants secured Pant for a staggering Rs 27 crore. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer emerged as the unexpected highlight of the auction on Sunday, as teams eagerly spent big on premier Indian talent.

Venkatesh, who contributed to Shreyas’ successful KKR team, returned to the franchise for an impressive Rs 23.75 crore after they used their Right to Match (RTM) card to bring him back, having initially chosen not to retain him.

In the early rounds, Shreyas Iyer had already made headlines by becoming the first player to eclipse Mitchell Starc's previous record, with Punjab Kings investing Rs 26.75 crore to potentially make him their captain, only for Pant to surpass him with a bid of Rs 27 crore from LSG.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar emerged as the star of Day 2 in the IPL Auction 2025, becoming the most expensive signing during the first half of the proceedings in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The experienced Indian pacer was snapped up by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for an impressive Rs 10.75 crore, solidifying their bowling lineup with a veteran who has consistently delivered in T20 cricket.

Joining Bhuvneshwar at RCB is Krunal Pandya, who was secured for Rs 5.75 crore. The versatile all-rounder will now play alongside Virat Kohli, adding depth to RCB’s middle order and bolstering their spin options. Other notable signings in the morning session included Deepak Chahar, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, and Marco Jansen, who rounded out the top five big-money deals on Day 2.

The auction, held at the Abadi Al Johar Arena, has been a high-stakes affair, with teams spending a combined Rs 467.95 crore on Day 1 to secure 72 players. Day 2 resumed with Set 13, beginning with Player No. 85, Mayank Agarwal, and proceeding to Vijayakanth Viyaskanth in Set 17. The accelerated auction phase is set to follow, where teams will target specific players to complete their squads.

RCB entered Day 2 with the largest remaining purse of Rs 30.65 crore, providing them with significant flexibility despite having only nine players, including three overseas stars. Similarly, Mumbai Indians (MI), with Rs 26.10 crore, are well-positioned to make bold moves, particularly as they have only one overseas player in their current roster.

Punjab Kings (Rs 22.50 crore) and Gujarat Titans (Rs 17.50 crore) are also expected to focus on strengthening their international lineup, having just five overseas players combined. Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, face a more cautious path with the smallest remaining budget of Rs 5.15 crore, requiring strategic planning to fill their squad gaps.

In the mid-tier budget range, Chennai Super Kings (Rs 15.60 crore), Delhi Capitals (Rs 13.80 crore), and Lucknow Super Giants (Rs 14.85 crore) are expected to take calculated risks to secure key players, balancing their rosters while preserving financial flexibility.

Rajasthan Royals (Rs 17.35 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 10.05 crore) continue to intrigue fans with their unpredictable strategies. With Rajasthan focusing on overseas reinforcements and KKR known for taking bold bets, both teams are poised to shake things up as the auction progresses.

As the day unfolds, all eyes are on the accelerated phase, where the franchises will finalize their squads and strategize for IPL 2025. The auction has already delivered high drama, with blockbuster deals, shrewd planning, and surprises keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
