Chennai Super Kings crash out in humiliation as Gujarat Titans hand them their biggest defeat in IPL history
NEW DELHI: Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings crashed out of IPL 2026 in disastrous fashion on Thursday after suffering the biggest defeat in their history, as Gujarat Titans stormed to a crushing 89-run win at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The emphatic victory not only helped Gujarat Titans sign off their league-stage campaign in style but also consolidated their second spot in the points table with 18 points from 14 games heading into the IPL 2026 playoffs. They are just behind table-toppers and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who also have 18 points but boast a superior net run rate and a game in hand.
For CSK, however, the defeat officially ended their playoff hopes and capped a disappointing campaign with their heaviest loss ever in the IPL.
The 89-run margin also became the biggest victory in Gujarat Titans’ IPL history.
GT continue dominance ahead of playoffs
Led brilliantly by skipper Shubman Gill, GT once again showcased why they have emerged as one of the strongest teams of IPL 2026.
Their top order completely dismantled the CSK bowling attack after being put in to bat first by Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Gill blasted a 37-ball 64, hammering seven fours and three sixes, while Sai Sudharsan continued his sensational season with a classy 84 off 53 balls. The pair added 125 runs for the opening wicket and raced to 100 inside 10 overs.
After Gill’s dismissal, Jos Buttler took complete control of the innings with an unbeaten 57 off just 27 balls. Buttler and Sudharsan stitched together another brutal partnership as GT piled up 229/4.
The total proved far beyond CSK’s reach.
Siraj destroys CSK chase
The chase never got going as Mohammed Siraj ripped through the top order in a fiery opening spell.
Siraj dismissed Sanju Samson for a first-ball duck before removing Gaikwad and Urvil Patel in quick succession to leave CSK reeling at 29/3.
Kagiso Rabada then joined the party by dismissing Matthew Short as CSK’s innings completely collapsed under scoreboard pressure.
Only Shivam Dube showed some resistance with a quickfire 47 off 17 balls, but the damage had already been done. Rashid Khan cleaned up the lower order as CSK were bowled out for 140 in just 14 overs.
Siraj, who finished with 3/26, said his focus during the powerplay was to build pressure.
“Ball is coming out nicely. While bowling in the powerplay, my priority is to build pressure,” he said after the match.
Gill called it an “important win” ahead of the playoffs.
“Happy to go in with the momentum we have,” the GT skipper said.
The defeat surpassed CSK’s previous biggest IPL loss — a 60-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in 2013 — as their IPL 2026 campaign ended in record-breaking disappointment.
