Glenn Maxwell opts out of IPL 2026; pens emotional goodbye to fans
Australian star Glenn Maxwell has officially withdrawn his name from the IPL 2026 auction, bringing an unexpected pause to his long and colourful journey in the league. Maxwell announced his decision through an emotional Instagram post, thanking fans and franchises for their support over the years.
In his message, Maxwell wrote:
“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I've decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It's a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me. The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I've been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever. Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully see you soon. Cheers, Maxi.”
Maxwell’s decision comes after a forgettable IPL 2025 campaign. Playing for Punjab Kings, who bought him for ₹4.20 crore, the all-rounder appeared in seven matches and managed only 48 runs, averaging 8 with a strike rate of 97.96. He did, however, contribute with the ball, picking up four wickets.
His exit adds to the growing list of big overseas names stepping away from IPL 2026. Earlier, Faf du Plessis opted out of the tournament, while Andre Russell announced his retirement after being released by KKR. Russell will now join Kolkata Knight Riders as a member of their support staff for the upcoming season.
