IPL 2020, KKR vs CSK: Chennai Super Kings lose way, Kolkata Knight Riders grab a win
It was a marvellous effort by KKR to say the least. Defending a modest total of 167, KKR bowlers pulled things back after Chennai openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis got them to a steady start. Shivam Mavi (1/32) had Du Plessis caught behind off a short and wide delivery. But it didn't deter Watson (50). The Australian played some exquisite shots to lead the charge along with Ambati Rayudu (30).
Pat Cummins' inability to pick wickets did hurt the Kolkata outfit but skipper Dinesh Karthik did a smart job in rotating his bowlers. Despite being 101/2 in 13 overs, CSK lost track when Kamlesh Nagarkoti dismissed Rayudu. Very soon, Sunil Narine had Watson trapped leg before.
Skipper MS Dhoni (11) was left with the finisher's job once again but to no avail. With 44 needed of the last four overs, Varun Chakravarthy (1/28) wrecked Dhoni's woodwork before Andre Russell wrapped things off as the CSK innings folded for 157/5.
Rahul Tripathi celebrated his promotion to the top by striking a 51-ball 81 as Kolkata Knight Riders returned to winning ways with a 10-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Tripathi stood tall on the way to his fifth IPL fifty before Kolkata faltered in the back end of the innings to be bowled out for 167. In reply, CSK were stopped at 157/5. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Having restored his confidence with a whirlwind 83 not out against Kings XI Punjab, veteran CSK opener Shane Watson picked up from where he had left to slam a 40-ball 50, his 21st in the league. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Watson feasted on the short-ball strategy of KKR bowlers in a 69-run partnership with Ambati Rayudu (30 from 27 balls). Needing 78 runs in the last 10 overs, the CSK duo departed for addition of just two runs, while Mahendra Singh Dhoni, coming out to bat at No. 4, got out for 11. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Sam Curran hit 17 from 11 balls, but that was not enough as CSK fell short. The win catapulted KKR to the third place in the table with three wins from five matches, while CSK remained at five with four points from six games. (BCCI/IPL/PTI Photo)
Earlier, Chennai Super Kings staged a remarkable comeback as KKR lost three wickets in the last over with 'birthday boy' Dwayne Bravo removing two of them for an impressive 3/37. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Tripathi raced to his fifty in 31 balls to give KKR a solid foundation after Dinesh Karthik called it right at the toss. At 93/2 at the midway stage, KKR looked set for a big score but Bravo struck after that. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Karn Sharma (2/25), Shradul Thakur (2/28), Sam Curran (2/26) claimed two wickets each as the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side bounced back in the back-10 by taking eight wickets while giving away just 74 runs. Dhoni picked up four catches, the last one being his best effort. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Tripathi played a risk-free knock and maintained a healthy run-rate. Karthik made a baffling decision to send Sunil Narine ahead of Eoin Morgan, at No. 4. But Narine did his job with a nine-ball 17 before being dismissed by an excellent combined effort by a diving Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis. (BCCI/IPL/ANI Photo)
Thakur, who had given the first breakthrough by dismissing an in-form Shubman Gill (11), claimed the big wicket of Andre Russell with a cross-seam short delivery as the KKR dazzler struggled to get going. (BCCI/IPL/PTI Photo)
Tripathi played a confident knock, moving well around the crease and looked comfortable handling the CSK bowlers. He used his nimble footwork to unsettle both pacers and spinners alike.
Dhoni used five bowlers, all completing their 4 overs quota. Barring pacer Deepak Chahar, who went for 47, none of the others let the KKR batsmen open their shoulders. Gill nicked one to keeper Dhoni while trying to pull Shardul Thakur's (2/28) cross seam delivery on the off stump.
Managing 52/1 in the powerplay, KKR looked poised for a good show before Nitish Rana was sent back by leggie Karn Sharma (2/25), who replaced Piyush Chawla in the squad. Sharma accounted for Narine too and KKR had their back against the wall.
Eoin Morgan and Andre Russell too went back without adding much. With Tripathi returning to the hut after a soft dismissal off Dwayne Bravo (3/37), the Knights knew 170 would be improbable.
