NEW DELHI: Mohammed Shami was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction for Rs 10 crore in Jeddah on Sunday.

Shami, one of India’s premier fast bowlers, has been a consistent performer in the IPL. Representing Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2024 season, Shami played a pivotal role in the team’s bowling attack.

Gujarat Titans bought him for INR 6.25 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction, and his performances led the relatively newer IPL side to retain him for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

In IPL 2023, Shami won the Purple Cap by finishing as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, scalping 28 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 18.64 and an economy of 8.03.

This stellar season added to his impressive IPL record, which stands at 127 wickets in 110 matches, with a best bowling figure of 4/11 and an overall economy rate of 8.43.

Shami sustained an ankle injury in the 2023 ODI World Cup and was subsequently ruled out of IPL 2024 due to the knock that required surgery.

Shami’s T20I, however, has been lacklustre. To date, he has played 23 T20I matches, taking 24 wickets at an average of 29.62 and an economy of 8.94.

Nevertheless, his ability to deliver fiery opening spells with the ball swinging in and out from all angles and execute pinpoint yorkers in death overs makes him an asset in the shortest format.
