NEW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals might have managed to score a paltry 115/9 in their last league match of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) against

Delhi Capitals

but their batsman Riyan Parag etched his name in the record books by becoming the youngest batsman to score a fifty in the history of the IPL.

At 17 years and 175 days, Parag overtook his Rajasthan teammate Sanju Samson's record of youngest half-centurion in the league. Samson made his maiden IPL fifty in 2013 when he was 18 years and 169 days old.

Rajasthan's decision to bat first backfired as they lost wickets at regular intervals but Parag (50 off 49, 4x4s, 2x6s) was the lone bright spot as he held onto one end and notched up his maiden IPL fifty to take the visitors close to the 120-run mark.

The Assam lad, who is primarily a batsman but can turn his arm over if needed, was, in fact, part of the 2018 U-19 World Cup-winning Indian team. He was also the leading run-scorer for Assam in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy (248 runs in 7 matches).

Riyan is another cricketer from Assam, after Abu Nechim, to play in the IPL. Nechim made his IPL debut in 2012 and went on to play four seasons (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015). He represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in his IPL career.
