'They don't buy into that': AB de Villiers critiques Hardik Pandya's captaincy style at Mumbai Indians
De Villiers remarked, "The captaincy style of Hardik Pandya is quite bravado. It's ego-driven in a way, chest out. I don't think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy. Almost like MS (Dhoni). Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out."
Citing his own experiences playing under Graeme Smith's leadership, de Villiers emphasized the importance of authenticity in leadership, particularly when working with experienced players. He recalled Smith's selfless approach to leadership, contrasting it with Pandya's more assertive style.
"When you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages, they don't buy into that. It worked at GT, where it was a younger team. Sometimes, inexperienced players love to follow that kind of leadership," de Villiers explained.
Despite his critique, de Villiers clarified that he admired Pandya's on-field abilities and respected his approach to the game. He acknowledged that while Pandya's leadership style may not align with everyone's preferences, it reflected his own beliefs and motivations.
"I'm not having a go at Hardik. I love watching him play. I love him putting out his chest because I was like that," de Villiers concluded. "I believed that as a batter, sometimes, you've got to fake it to make it."
Kolkata Knight Riders down Mumbai Indians to confirm playoff berth
Spinner Varun Chakravarthy's impressive 2-17 helped Kolkata Knight Riders secure a play-off spot, defeating Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a rain-reduced IPL match.
Kolkata Knight Riders posted 157-7 with Venkatesh Iyer leading the charge with a quickfire 42 off 21 balls after being put in to bat at Eden Gardens.
Despite Mumbai Indians' solid start at 65-0, Chakravarthy's crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya turned the tide in Kolkata's favour.
Mumbai Indians' innings ended at 139-8, with Tilak Varma's brisk 32 off 17 balls before falling to Harshit Rana, who also claimed two wickets in the last over.
Andre Russell's two wickets, including that of Suryakumar Yadav, supported Kolkata's victory, securing their ninth win in 12 matches and the first playoff berth.
The top four teams will advance to the play-offs, with the final scheduled for May 26 in Chennai, as Kolkata Knight Riders set the pace for the playoffs.
Despite early setbacks, Venkatesh Iyer's aggressive innings, complemented by contributions from Nitish Rana and Andre Russell, propelled Kolkata to a competitive total.
Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla's two-wicket hauls were not enough for Mumbai Indians as Kolkata Knight Riders' balanced performance sealed their play-off berth.
