WATCH: Dhols, dances and tears of joy — Baramulla erupts as Auqib Nabi's IPL dream comes alive
NEW DELHI: Scenes of unfiltered joy swept through Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday evening after local cricketer Auqib Nabi Dar sealed a life-changing Rs 8.40 crore deal with Delhi Capitals at the IPL auction. What followed was a celebration that quickly spilled from his home into the streets — and onto social media.

Videos of jubilant scenes outside Nabi's residence in Sheeri town, north Kashmir, went viral within minutes of the announcement. Locals gathered in large numbers, beating dhols, dancing and chanting as the usually quiet neighbourhood turned into a festive arena. Mobile phone flashlights lit up the celebrations as friends, neighbours and well-wishers poured in to share the moment with the family.
As word of Nabi's selection spread, the Dar household became the epicentre of the celebrations. Family members distributed sweets, offered prayers and embraced visitors, many of whom described the moment as one of collective pride for the entire region. The atmosphere was charged with emotion — a mix of relief, disbelief and sheer happiness after years of struggle and perseverance.
“I thank God that I have lived to see this day,” said his father, Ghulam Nabi, a schoolteacher. “His selection is the result of his hard work. I am extremely happy, beyond words. It is only God's blessings and Aqib's dedication that have brought him here.” He also urged young people to balance sports with education and to stay away from negative influences.
Friends and relatives echoed similar sentiments, pointing to Nabi's discipline and resilience. “It is a moment of immense happiness for all of us. Celebrations are going on everywhere,” said Sajad-ul-Bashir, a relative. “He has always been a hard worker, and today sports has brought recognition to Sheeri and north Kashmir.”
Nabi's breakthrough has been built on consistent performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Ranji Trophy this season, earning him recognition as one of Jammu and Kashmir's most reliable fast bowlers.
The moment also drew praise from the political leadership. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah congratulated Nabi in a post on X, calling the achievement a reward for years of hard work. An avid cricket fan, Abdullah added that he would now be cheering for Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL season.
