MI vs PBKS Highlights, IPL 2026: Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer power Punjab Kings to 7-wicket win over Mumbai Indians

This is the third successive victory for PBKS over MI.

Five games without defeats are PBKS's joint-longest streak to kick off an IPL season; they had started their 2014 campaign with five straight wins.

Punjab Kings continued their dominant run in the Indian Premier League with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Thursday, handing the hosts a fourth straight defeat. Despite a towering effort from Quinton de Kock, who smashed an unbeaten 112, and a gritty 50 from Naman Dhir, Mumbai’s total of 195/6 proved insufficient on a placid Wankhede surface.

De Kock, returning to the XI in place of injured skipper Rohit Sharma, anchored the innings with a fluent 60-ball century, while Dhir provided strong support in a 132-run third-wicket stand that revived MI from early trouble. However, the momentum stalled in the final overs as Punjab’s bowlers kept things tight.

The chase, however, was a one-sided affair. Prabhsimran Singh punished a wayward Mumbai attack, including an ineffective spell from Jasprit Bumrah (0/41), after being given an early reprieve. He tore into the bowling with a blistering unbeaten 80 off just 31 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes.

At the other end, skipper Shreyas Iyer continued his rich vein of form, registering his third successive fifty with a composed 66 off 35 balls. Together, the duo added a decisive 139-run stand for the third wicket, effectively ending the contest.

Despite brief resistance from Allah Ghazanfar, who picked up 2/31, Mumbai’s bowling unit failed to apply sustained pressure. Punjab eventually coasted home in just 16.3 overs, finishing at 198/3 with 21 balls to spare and reaffirming their status as one of the tournament’s most dominant sides.

A fourth consecutive defeat this season for Mumbai Indians, as Hardik Pandya shares a hug with Shreyas Iyer during the post-match handshakes.

The 196-run target proved to be well below par on a surface that only got easier under lights. Even 250 would not have tested a rampant Punjab Kings batting display, such was their dominance over the MI attack.

Jasprit Bumrah once again finished wicketless, while impact substitute Allah Ghazanfar provided early breakthroughs by removing Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly. But once Prabhsimran Singh got going, the tone of the chase changed completely.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer then took centre stage, starting with a crisp cover drive off his first delivery and never allowing MI any way back. His standout moment was a towering third-tier six off Shardul Thakur that summed up Punjab’s authority. Dew further aided the chase, but the game was effectively sealed once Iyer and Prabhsimran combined, with their partnership dismantling the MI attack and taking the contest away long before the finish line.

It’s a half-volley on the pads, and Shreyas Iyer shuffles across to flick it away, but doesn’t get the elevation. The ball travels flat and low, and Dhir dives forward to complete a clean two-handed catch. He shows little celebration, but there’s relief in the Mumbai camp.

15 RUNS! Prabhsimran Singh (78 off 36) takes charge, opening Hardik Pandya’s over with a boundary and a six to collect 15 runs.

The required rate dips below six as Punjab Kings tighten their grip on the chase, closing in on a commanding win at the Wankhede.

16 runs come off Jasprit Bumrah’s over as his wicket drought continues. Shreyas Iyer (42) launches a towering six over deep mid-wicket, while Prabhsimran Singh (66) adds a boundary to cap off a dominant passage of play.

The duo also brings up a 100-run stand for the third wicket, putting Punjab Kings firmly in control of the chase. Mumbai Indians are running out of options as the game slips away.

Punjab Kings are cruising in this chase, with momentum completely on their side. Mumbai Indians desperately need breakthroughs to claw their way back into the contest.

Alongside him, skipper Shreyas Iyer (21) plays the perfect supporting role, rotating the strike and ensuring the pressure stays on the bowlers. The duo also completes a fluent half-century stand, rebuilding strongly after the early setbacks.

It’s fired in full and outside off, drawing Connolly into the drive. He’s slightly late on it, gets a faint edge, and de Kock completes a neat take behind the stumps.

A commendable recovery from Mumbai Indians after Arshdeep Singh struck twice in two balls to remove Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav early. However, a subdued finish — just 35 runs in the last four overs — prevented them from pushing past the 200-mark.

Promoted up the order, Naman Dhir joined forces with Quinton de Kock to first stabilise the innings and then accelerate, stitching together a 100-plus stand for the third wicket. Both reached their fifties, with de Kock going on to convert his into a superb century in his first game of the season, carrying his bat through the innings.

Yet, Mumbai couldn’t quite find the late surge they needed, thanks to disciplined death bowling from Marco Jansen, Arshdeep and Vijaykumar Vyshak, who executed their variations effectively. It looks like a competitive total, but Punjab Kings will back themselves to chase it down.

He faced five balls, all pinpoint yorkers, and this one was the perfect finish. It tailed in late, Rutherford tried to clear his front leg, but the ball sneaked past the inside edge and crashed into middle stump. Nothing he could have done against that level of execution.

Jansen takes the pace off and angles it across, forcing Hardik into a mistimed big shot. The ball skies towards long-on, where Iyer sprints to his left, leaps sideways and reverse-cups it mid-air before flicking it up to Bartlett while still airborne — a breathtaking relay catch.

"We are going to bowl first. (Talks about the team) Yeah, so far so good. I think we've got a brilliant start in the IPL. That's what any captain desires to have, especially at the start of the season and our combination has been splendid throughout the season. So I feel that we just have to create the rhythm and maintain the momentum. I just ask everyone from the team that they should stick to the present and see to it that they are intent and they are proactive throughout. You know, it's easy to get complacent at times, but this game is a fast-paced game and you have to be in the game, in your zone throughout. So that's what I keep telling them every now and then. Looks a bit dry, but I interacted with a few of the players. They said that with the dew coming in, it gets better and better. So based on that, I made that decision. "Oh, tonight's feeling, obviously, to start the tournament well, that's what every team's after. But equally, we've spoken about what a dangerous team we're playing tonight. And they've been champions of this tournament for quite a few years. And they're always hard to beat here. So we're looking forward to the challenge. It feels like you're understanding that role that the season might be quiet, but you might have a few moments where you have to step up for the team. When you think of dimensions, we know it's not the biggest ground going around, so I'm batting here from the southern end.
