NEW DELHI: Young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made history on Friday, becoming the first Indian batter to score 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year before turning 23. The milestone came during the second Test against New Zealand at Pune's MCA Stadium, where Jaiswal contributed 30 runs before being dismissed by Glenn Phillips.
By achieving this remarkable feat, Jaiswal joins an elite group of Test cricket legends who reached 1,000 runs in a year at such a young age. He is now the fifth batter in history to accomplish this, placing his name alongside some of the game's greatest.
Scorecard: India vs New Zealand, 2nd TestThe record was first set by West Indies great Garfield Sobers in 1958 when he amassed 1,193 runs. The achievement remained unmatched for 45 years until South Africa's Graeme Smith scored 1,198 runs in 2003. Two more names joined the list, with Smith's compatriot AB de Villiers accumulating 1,008 runs in 2005, followed by England's Alastair Cook with 1,013 runs in 2006.
Despite Jaiswal's historic achievement, India found themselves in a precarious position on the second day of the Test. Jaiswal's wicket left India struggling at 70/4 in the morning session, trailing New Zealand’s first-innings total of 259.
Jaiswal's record-breaking journey is a testament to his potential as one of India's most promising young talents in the game.
