Dane Paterson achieved a remarkable five-wicket haul, taking five wickets for 61 runs. This was his second five-wicket haul in consecutive Test matches.

Debutant Corbin Bosch also impressed, securing four wickets for 63 runs.

Kamran Ghulam provided some resistance for Pakistan with a brisk 54 runs off 71 balls.

Bosch made a memorable start to his Test career. He took a wicket with his very first ball when Pakistan captain Shan Masood edged a drive to Marco Jansen at fourth slip.

Masood and Saim Ayub had earlier shared a 36-run partnership for the first wicket.

After winning the toss, South Africa chose to field, and Pakistan's openers batted cautiously during the first hour on a pitch offering assistance to the bowlers.

The pace of the innings shifted following Masood's dismissal. Pakistan's batters began to score more freely but also presented opportunities for the South African bowlers.

Brief scores:

Pakistan, first innings, 211 in 57.3 overs (Kamran Ghulam 54; D. Paterson 5-61, C. Bosch 4-63)
