MUMBAI: Former India wicketkeeper
Ajay Ratra has applied to be the coach of the
India women
’s team. Apart from Ratra, ex-India women's team coach Tushar Arothe and Sulakshan Kulkarni too have applied for the job.
Ratra is currently the assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals in IPL-2021. The 39-year-old Ratra coached Assam in the last domestic season. He has coached the Punjabin the past too, and has worked as a fielding and wicket-keeping coach with the Indian women's team during camps. In 2002 in the West Indies, Ratra had become the youngest wicketkeeper (aged 20) to score a Test hundred, and the second Indian wicketkeeper to score a century overseas. Ratra, who is currently employed by ONGC as manager of corporate communications, played six Tests and 12 ODIs for India.
Ratra will also have to compete with former India opener
WV Raman
, who has reapplied for the job, while former chief of the selection committee, Hemlata Kala, Mamatha Maben, Suman Sharma, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Jaya Sharma have also thrown their hat in the ring.
On April 14, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applications for the head coach’s role after Raman’s contract expired last October. The former India cricketer, however, was asked to continue till the recently concluded home series against South Africa.
In the advertisement, the BCCI had stated that the head coach will have to work with the women’s national team, Women’s India A and Women’s India U-19 teams. The India women's team is supposed to travel to England in June for a one-off Test and three T20Is and ODIs.
The head coach will be picked by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (
CAC
), which is headed by
Madan Lal and includes two other members in
RP Singh
and Sulakshana Naik. The interview process is expected to be held online soon.
