Brett Lee announced as latest inductee to Australian Cricket Hall of Fame
Former Australian speedster Brett Lee has been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, with the announcement made on Sunday in recognition of his outstanding international career marked by raw pace, longevity, and exemplary sportsmanship.
Now 49, Lee is widely regarded as one of the fastest bowlers the game has ever produced, often mentioned in the same breath as Pakistan great Shoaib Akhtar.
He represented Australia between 1999 and 2012, featuring in 76 Test matches, 221 One-Day Internationals, and 25 T20 Internationals. Across all formats, Lee finished with an impressive tally of 718 international wickets — 310 in Tests, 221 in ODIs, and 38 in T20Is.
Beyond the traditional formats, Lee played a key role in shaping the early years of T20 cricket. He turned out for several teams around the world, including the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, and was part of the squad that lifted the inaugural BBL title.
At the international level, Lee was a vital member of Australia’s golden era, contributing to three World Cup triumphs in 1999, 2003, and 2007. He also featured in multiple Ashes series against England, further cementing his place in Australian cricket history.
Famous for regularly clocking speeds above 160 km/h, Lee was not just about express pace. His ability to combine sheer speed with control and skill made him a constant threat to batters across conditions.
In 2008, his performances earned him the Allan Border Medal, crowning him Australian Test Player of the Year. Lee also developed a strong fan base in India through his frequent appearances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), along with his involvement in cultural ventures such as music and film projects.
Peter King, Chair of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, said Lee was a deserving recipient of the honour, praising his influence both on and off the field.
“Brett Lee’s induction into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame is richly deserved. He was not only one of the fastest and most exciting bowlers the world has seen, but also an outstanding ambassador for Australian cricket.
"Brett’s impact transcended statistics — he inspired fans around the world with the way he played the game, the respect he showed opponents, and the pride he took in representing his country," King said in an official statement.
“Now a respected commentator, Lee continues to contribute to the game and its communities globally long after his final delivery. The Australian Cricket Hall of Fame celebrates players whose careers have left a lasting legacy on the sport," he added.
