NEW DELHI: Former England cricket captain Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff has made his first public statement since his hospitalization following an accident during the filming of the popular motoring show "Top Gear."
In a video shared by the England Cricket team on social media, Flintoff was seen presenting an England cap to current spin bowler Tom Hartley in recognition of his debut performance last month. During his speech, Flintoff expressed gratitude for the support he received following the December 2022 accident.
The incident had left Flintoff with reported broken ribs and facial injuries, and nine months later, he still bears visible facial cuts and scars as a result.
"This cap changes your life. It's one of those things. It's before and after it," said an emotional Flintoff while addressing Hartley. "This enables you to walk tall and move faster. Play with passion, play with pride, play with belief. And also, (be) part of a family of people. They'll share the good times with you, the successes. But, as I found over the past few months, they'll be there in the hardest times of your life; they will stand next to you."
Flintoff has maintained a relatively low profile since the accident, with a rare public appearance during England's opening one-day international against New Zealand in September. In recent months, he began working casually with the England coaching staff.
Retiring from all forms of cricket in 2010 at the age of 32 due to a persistent knee injury, Flintoff's cricket career was highlighted by leading England to victory in the Ashes in 2005, ending Australia's 18-year dominance.
After retirement, Flintoff transitioned into the media, becoming a co-host of "Top Gear" in 2019. His association with the show has been marred by incidents, including a 2020 crash into a market stall while filming, where he escaped without injuries.
In March of this year, the BBC suspended production on the latest "Top Gear" series as part of an investigation into Flintoff's December 2022 accident.
Notably, Flintoff is not the sole "Top Gear" host to have experienced a high-speed crash while filming for the show. In 2006, Richard Hammond was involved in a severe accident when he crashed a Vampire jet car at a speed of 288 miles per hour. Hammond endured a two-week coma and sustained severe head injuries but ultimately recovered and returned to the series.
