I would like to play in 2028 LA Olympics: Steve Smith

Australian batting legend Steve Smith has revealed his ambitions to represent Australia in cricket's return to the Olympics at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Smith, who recently showcased his T20 prowess with a stunning century for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL), expressed his excitement about the opportunity to participate in the global event.

"I would like to play in the Olympics; I reckon that would be cool," Smith told FOX Sports. "We will see how far I go in terms of long-form cricket. But I am going to play short-form cricket for a while, I think, when I do finish. You never know."

Smith's brilliant 121 off 64 balls against Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Cricket Ground marked his third BBL century, equaling Ben McDermott’s record for the most centuries in the competition’s history. Despite inconsistent T20I performances in recent years, Smith has been a standout in domestic leagues, scoring prolifically since 2023, including a title-winning run with Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket (MLC).

The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will mark cricket's return to the Games after 128 years, its only previous appearance being in 1900. Smith’s enthusiasm aligns with the sport's growing global appeal, particularly in the T20 format.




Reflecting on his current focus, Smith said he enjoys playing for the Sixers and has not discussed a national T20 recall with selectors. "I have not really spoken about it. I am not really that fussed. I do what I do, enjoy coming back here playing for the Sixers and helping the team have success. I love the boys in that changeroom," he said.

With 10,000 Test runs within reach and a potential tour to Sri Lanka looming, Smith continues to balance his international commitments and franchise cricket. His performance in T20s has been marked by adaptability and intelligent shot selection, as evidenced by his approach in the Sixers’ recent matches.
