New Zealand secured a thrilling eight-run victory over Sri Lanka in first T20I at Mount Maunganui on Saturday. A late bowling resurgence, spearheaded by Jacob Duffy, proved decisive in the tight contest.
Sri Lanka appeared poised for victory, smoothly chasing the 173-run target. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis built a solid foundation, reaching 95 without loss by the halfway mark.
With the score at 121-0 in the 14th over, Jacob Duffy dramatically shifted the game's momentum. He claimed three wickets in four deliveries, all caught behind by Mitchell Hay. This started with the dismissal of Kusal Mendis, who scored 46 off 36 balls.
Pathum Nissanka continued his impressive innings, reaching a T20 career-high score of 90 off 60 balls. His knock included seven fours and three sixes. However, no other Sri Lankan batsman managed to reach double figures.
"We should have done better," Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka admitted, reflecting on the team's performance.
"Pathum and Kusal batted well, the rest including me should take responsibility for this loss."
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged Duffy's pivotal role in the victory. His figures of 3-21 significantly altered the course of the match after New Zealand posted 172-8 in their 20 overs.
A century partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell underpinned New Zealand's innings. The pair joined forces in the 10th over with New Zealand struggling at 65-5.
Mitchell and Bracewell added 105 runs before both were dismissed in the final over. Mitchell scored 62 off 42 deliveries, while Bracewell contributed 59 off 33.
"It was a massive partnership for us, the way they went about it, they soaked it up for a bit then put the pressure back on to put up a pretty good score," Santner commented.
Binura Fernando, who dismissed both New Zealand openers in his second over, finished with impressive figures of 2-22.
Tim Robinson was dismissed for 11, caught and bowled by Fernando after driving a short-pitched delivery straight back to the bowler.
Three balls later, Rachin Ravindra departed for eight, caught behind after nicking an outswinger.
Mark Chapman, having survived a drop on four, reached 15 before being caught on the boundary by Kamindu Mendis off Matheesha Pathirana's bowling.
Glenn Phillips was trapped leg before wicket for eight off nine deliveries. Mitchell Hay was dismissed for a duck, playing and missing at a delivery that drifted into his pads.
