NEW DELHI: MS Dhoni, the most triumphant Indian cricket team captain, stands alone as the only leader to guide his team to victories in the ICC ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and secure the top position in test rankings. From 2007 to 2013, the Indian cricket team experienced a golden era under Dhoni's leadership.
When Rohit Sharma took over as captain, he was anticipated to bring India its first ICC title since 2013, which he accomplished by leading the team to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Expectations are high for him to steer the team to even greater achievements in the future.
Harbhajan Singh, having played under both captains, provided fascinating insights into their distinct leadership styles on the podcast "Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli."
"Dhoni and Rohit are completely different leaders," said Harbhajan Singh on the podcast "Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli."
Harbhajan elaborated on Dhoni's approach, stating that he would never approach a player and inquire about their preferred field placement. Instead, Dhoni allowed players to learn from their own mistakes.
"Rohit is very different. He will go and talk to each player. He is someone who will put his arm around your shoulder and tell you what he expects from you. He will give you that confidence that yes you can do it," said Harbhajan.
"He is leading for 12-13 years MI and then India. That experience show. In the last two-three years, the major change that has come is leading in Tests. In shorter format, you can get away but in tests that is not the case."
