NEW DELHI: Following a resounding defeat in the opening Test against Australia in Perth, Pakistan are focusing on a two-day tour match against a Victorian XI to regroup and rebuild confidence, aiming to address shortcomings and fine-tune preparations ahead of the pivotal Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
The first Test saw Pakistan endure a 360-run loss, marking their 15th consecutive Test defeat on Australian soil. Struggling to adapt to the challenging conditions, the batsmen managed a mere 89 runs in their second innings.
The spotlight is now on pace spearhead
Shaheen Afridi, who is expected to rediscover his form and lead the bowling attack more effectively.
Coach
Mohammad Hafeez highlighted the need for improved execution of skills, stating, "We made plans for the team, but unfortunately, we couldn't execute them well. The guys wanted to, but they never applied themselves, to be very honest."
The hastily arranged tour match at the Junction Oval lacks first-class status but offers a crucial opportunity for Pakistan's batsmen to adapt to the conditions expected at the MCG. Facing several Australian players with Test experience in the Victorian XI will be invaluable for the visiting team.
"We couldn't execute our skills well," said Coach Hafeez. "We made plans for the team, but unfortunately, we couldn't execute them well. That's not an excuse."
Pakistan's selectors find solace in having a specialist spinner available, with Noman Ali returning to the mix after recovering from a cut finger. The team is eager to witness improved performances from senior players, including Shan Masood and Babar Azam, to avoid extending the losing streak to 16 in Melbourne.
Coach Hafeez remains optimistic, saying, "I've seen during the preparation the amount of talent these guys have. There is no doubt they can beat Australia here in Australia."
The tour match will serve as a crucial platform for Pakistan to regroup and address challenges before the must-win Test in Melbourne.
