R Ashwin not the first Indian to play in the Big Bash League
Indian cricket star Ravichandran Ashwin has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming BBL 15 season, marking one of the most high-profile signings in Big Bash League history. The move sees one of India’s most accomplished cricketers bring his international experience and skill to the Australian T20 competition.
The 39-year-old veteran will join the Thunder after completing his commitments in the ILT20 in the UAE, which concludes on January 4. Ashwin will play alongside stars like David Warner and Sam Konstas, bringing immense experience and skill to a spin-heavy squad that also features Chris Green, Tom Andrews, and Tanveer Sangha.
Ashwin’s move comes after he retired from Tests last year and opted out of the IPL, freeing him to explore opportunities in other T20 leagues. Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg personally reached out to gauge Ashwin’s interest, recognising the Indian off-spinner’s potential to attract fans and boost television ratings, particularly among Australia’s Indian community.
Although Ashwin did not register for this year’s BBL overseas player draft, Cricket Australia granted him an exemption, similar to Martin Guptill’s last-minute signing with Melbourne Renegades in 2022. Under BBL rules, clubs can sign multiple overseas players, but only three are allowed in the starting XI.
The Sydney Thunder have already secured pace ace Lockie Ferguson, Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan, and English wicketkeeper Sam Billings, making Ashwin the latest jewel in a strong, balanced squad.
While Unmukt Chand was the first Indian to feature in the Big Bash, representing the Melbourne Renegades in 2021/22, Ashwin’s arrival marks a new era. He will be the first high-profile Indian star to play in the Australian T20 tournament, and his presence promises to add firepower and excitement to the Thunder lineup.
