NEW DELHI: The Women's Asia Cup T20 tournament witnessed two contrasting matches on Monday, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh emerging victorious against Malaysia and Thailand, respectively, in Group B. These victories have brought them closer to securing a semifinal berth.
In the first match, the hosts, Sri Lanka, showcased their dominance by thrashing Malaysia by a staggering 114 runs. Chamari Athapaththu's blistering unbeaten knock of 119 runs off 69 deliveries, laced with 14 boundaries and seven maximums, propelled Sri Lanka to an imposing total of 184/4 after electing to bat first. Harshitha Madavi (26) and Anushka Sanjeewani (31) also contributed with valuable runs.
Sri Lanka's bowling attack complemented their batting prowess, as Shashini Gimhani (3/9), Kawya Kavindi (2/7), and Kavisha Dilhari (2/4) delivered exceptional figures, bundling out Malaysia for a paltry 40 runs in 19.5 overs.
Inoshi Priyadharshani (1/10), Sachini Nisansala (1/4), and Ama Kanchana (1/5) also chipped in with a wicket each. For Malaysia, only Elsa Hunter (10 off 11 balls) and Aina Najwa (9 off 43 balls) managed to reach double-digit scores.
In the second match of the day, Thailand struggled to put up a competitive total, managing only 96/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Nattaya Boochatham's 40 off 41 balls was the lone bright spot for Thailand after they opted to bat first. Rabeya Khan was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, claiming four wickets for 14 runs, while Sabikun Nahar (2/28) and Ritu Moni (2/10) also contributed with two wickets each.
Chasing a modest target of 97, Bangladesh cruised to victory, reaching 100/3 in 17.3 overs. Murshida Khatun anchored the chase with a patient 50 off 55 balls, while Ishma Tanjim (16) provided valuable support. Despite Dilara Akter's early dismissal for 17, Khatun and Tanjim's 60-run partnership ensured a comfortable win for Bangladesh.
With four points each, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh currently occupy the top two spots in Group B, inching closer to securing semifinal berths in the Women's Asia Cup T20 tournament.
