Vijay Hazare Trophy: Mumbai implode in spectacular fashion, lose by one run

JAIPUR: Mumbai let a near certain chase slip, collapsing from 201/6 to 215 all out and losing by one run to Punjab in their Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group C match on Thursday. Chasing 217 after Punjab were bowled out for 216 in 45.1 overs, Mumbai were set up by a rapid 21 from Musheer Khan and an outrageous Sarfaraz Khan assault.

Sarfaraz smashed a Vijay Hazare record 15-ball fifty and finished with 62 off 20, including a 30-run over off Abhishek Sharma. With Shreyas Iyer striking a fluent 45 off 34, Mumbai were cruising. But Sarfaraz fell leg-before to leg-spinner Mayank Markande. Iyer’s dismissal soon after sparked a slide. Suryakumar Yadav (15), Shivam Dube (12) and Hardik Tamore (15) couldn’t close it out. Punjab kept their nerve at the death, with Gurnoor Brar (4/57) and Markande (four wickets) squeezing out the last four wickets for 14 runs.




Pandya’s heroics in vain as Baroda miss quarters berth
Baroda suffered a heartbreak despite registering a 149-run victory over Chandigarh, missing out on a quarterfinal berth on net run rate. Baroda piled up a mammoth 391 all out in 49.1 overs with Hardik Pandya smashing a brutal 31-ball 75, including nine sixes.

Nabi hits ton batting at No. 8
A superlative show came from Jammu and Kashmir’s Aquib Nabi. The seamer first claimed three wickets to restrict Hyderabad to 268 for nine in 50 overs, but he wasn’t done yet. With J&K tottering at 90/7 in their chase, Nabi, batting at No. 8, came to the rescue, striking an 82-ball 114*, to steer J&K home. (with agency inputs)
