Iyer, appointed vice-captain of the ODI side for the upcoming New Zealand series subject to medical clearance, will captain Mumbai in their final two league matches after regular skipper Shardul Thakur was ruled out with a calf injury sustained during Mumbai’s fifth-round match against Maharashtra. The 31-year-old Iyer is returning to competitive cricket after recovering from a spleen injury — laceration with internal bleeding — suffered during India’s ODI series in Australia in Oct 2025.
Iyer trained with the Mumbai squad on Monday morning, taking part in fielding and catching drills before having a short batting stint in the nets.
“Shreyas Iyer will take over the leadership responsibilities in place of Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury and is currently unavailable for selection,” MCA secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar said.
The in-form Sarfaraz Khan, who missed the last game against Maharashtra due to quadriceps pain, is likely to return to the playing XI on Tuesday.
Mumbai play Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday (Jan 6) followed by their final league outing against Punjab on Thursday (Jan 8). Both matches are scheduled at Jaipur’s Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground.
