PAK vs AUS Highlights, 1st ODI: Pakistan win by 5 wickets

Earlier, The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup begins with a highly anticipated contest as Pakistan and Australia face off in the first ODI of their three-match series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. With both teams looking to build momentum in the 50-over format, the series offers a valuable opportunity to assess combinations and identify players who can play key roles in the years ahead.

Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi won the toss and opted to bowl first after assessing what appeared to be a slow and low surface. The hosts will be hoping their pace attack, led by Shaheen and Haris Rauf, can make early inroads and put Australia under pressure. The match also carries added significance as Pakistan take the field for their 1,000th ODI, becoming one of the few nations to reach the landmark.

Australia, led by Josh Inglis, are entering their first ODI assignment since defeating India 2-1 in a home series last year. The visitors have named an interesting blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with young batter Oliver Peake making his ODI debut. Inglis praised the youngster's temperament and expressed confidence in his ability to deliver on the big stage.

Pakistan will be keen to put behind their recent 2-1 series defeat against Bangladesh and make a strong statement at home. Australia, meanwhile, will look to continue their positive run in the format and begin their World Cup preparations on the right note. With quality players on both sides and important points of pride at stake, the series opener promises an intriguing battle in Rawalpindi.

Tough grind through the middle phase - Australia needed someone to stand tall in the eye of the spin storm, and Matthew Short answered the call. He ground his way to a watchful fifty while Renshaw held firm from the other end, the two stitching together a 55-run stand that steadied the ship. But Minhas came back to end it, dismissing Short and leaving Australia at 145/6, with Renshaw the last recognised batter standing. Renshaw handled the spin expertly for as long as he was there, grinding his way to a well-earned fifty. But Abrar ended his vigil, and with him went Australia's last real resistance as the innings collapsed in a hurry. Kuhnemann chipped in usefully at the death to help Australia scrape to 200, but on a sluggish surface, it still looks like a below-average score at best.

20:14 (IST) May 30

Bright start turned into a downward spiral - Australia started cautiously and sensibly enough, with Carey and Short seeing off the new-ball threat on a slow, low surface. The seamers found a bit of help, and for a while, the tourists looked like they had read the conditions well. Then the spinners came on, and everything unravelled in a hurry. Abrar drew first blood by breaking the opening stand, but it was debutant Arafat Minhas who really twisted the knife, rattling off three quick wickets to send Australia into a tailspin. From a relatively comfortable 62/1, they found themselves sliding at 68/4 before they could catch their breath. Short, to his credit, kept his head while those around him lost theirs, picking his way through the spin quartet with patience and a steady eye on a pitch offering plenty of grip.

20:09 (IST) May 30

Pakistan boss it up with the ball - A comprehensive bowling display from Pakistan. Rather, very disciplined as well and Shaheen Afridi has his men in a huddle to soak it all in. They made life uncomfortable for the Australians at every turn, and leading the charge was a 21-year-old debutant Arafat Minhas, who capped a spectacular debut with a memorable five-wicket haul. A sorry batting card for Australia. Short and Renshaw both chipped in with fifties, but beyond that pair, there was precious little resistance as the rest of the order crumbled against the Pakistani spin barrage.

Haris Rauf to Matthew Kuhnemann, OUT! TAKEN! Haris Rauf wraps things up here. Australia have been bowled out for exactly 200. Rauf comes around the wicket, serves this full at 123.1 kph, cleverly changing the pace of the ball, and angles it into the leg side as well. Matthew Kuhnemann backs away and tries to play at it with hard hands, but gets completely deceived by the lack of pace. He ends up just chipping it in the air, and Babar Azam from short mid-wicket runs to his right to take a dolly.

20:06 (IST) May 30

Haris Rauf (5-0-24-0) is back on. How long can this last Aussie batting pair survive? Let's see...

Arafat Minhas to Nathan Ellis, OUT! BOWLED! And that's the five-for for Arafat Minhas. According to the on-air commentators, he becomes the first-ever Pakistani male bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul on his ODI debut. Keeps it stump-to-stump again, a touch shorter this time and around off. The ball skids through quickly off the deck. Ellis backs away to cut but is rushed by the pace, the ball beats the angled bat as the ball crashes into the off stump. A dream debut for the left-arm spinner, one to cherish forever. All the wickets so far have fallen to spin and Australia are 199/8.

Kuhnemann is sucked on the front foot and looks to defend, but the ball spins past his blade and the keeper grabs it behind the stumps. A huge appeal for caught behind, but not given. Shadab is certain that he has his man, and the keeper also feeds in the appeal to convince Shaheen to go for a review. The UltraEdge first comes up and shows that there is a slight spike when the ball is next to the back thigh of the batter. So it is not off the edge and Ball Tracking confirms that it is pitching well outside leg. So, the on-field decision is upheld.

PAK vs AUS Highlights, 1st ODI: Pakistan win by 5 wickets

Earlier, Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi won the toss and elected to bowl first against Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday. The series is being viewed as an important step in the preparations of both teams for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Explaining his decision at the toss, Shaheen pointed to the nature of the surface, describing it as slow and low. The left-arm pacer said Pakistan hoped to make the most of the conditions with the ball and gain an early advantage. He also reflected on the significance of the occasion, with Pakistan playing their 1,000th ODI, calling it a proud milestone for the country and the team.

Australia captain Josh Inglis, meanwhile, expected similar conditions to those encountered during Australia's recent T20 assignment and said his side would assess the pitch quickly before looking to post a competitive total. Inglis also confirmed the ODI debut of young batter Oliver Peake, backing the youngster to make an impact after an impressive start to his professional career.

Pakistan enter the series after a 2-1 defeat against Bangladesh away from home and will be eager to bounce back in front of their home crowd. Australia, who last played an ODI against India in October last year, begin their latest 50-over campaign looking to make a strong start.
