Welcome back for the final session of the day. The two umpires and the English players have made their way out to the centre. England are starting with pace in the form of Matthew Potts. Potts to Kamran first up. Let's play...
... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
As we have seen throughout the series, the older the ball gets, the easier it becomes to bat, and this trend continued in the second session with significantly less spin on offer compared to the first. Given the slower nature of the surface, the pacers will need to work harder after Tea to capitalize on any reverse swing available. For Ghulam, it will be a matter of starting fresh, while Saud Shakeel, having faced just two balls, will aim to settle into his innings and build a solid partnership. There are 33 overs left in the day's play, and we should be able to get all of them in, with the option of extending play by an additional 30 minutes if needed. Do join us back at 10 am GMT for the third and final session of the day.
However, as the old ball began to reverse, Ben Stokes seized the opportunity to introduce pace from both ends, even bringing himself into the attack. This change unsettled Ghulam, who had been at ease against the spinners but suddenly looked less comfortable facing the reversing ball. Despite battling cramps, Ghulam persevered to see out the session. Unfortunately for Pakistan, Ayub's innings came to a tame end as he popped a catch straight to short mid-off in the penultimate over before Tea, bringing an abrupt conclusion to their impressive 149-run partnership.
England will head into the Tea break with a bit of relief after that late wicket, but despite the breakthrough, it’s Pakistan who took the honours in this session. 94 runs were scored in the session from 28 overs at a rate of 3.36 runs per over. Earlier, Saim Ayub and the debutant, Kamran Ghulam picked up right where they left off in the morning session, giving a solid account of themselves. They looked assured, especially against spin, managing to find the perfect balance between caution and aggression. It wasn’t just a case of block, block, block but both batters kept the scoreboard ticking on their way to well-deserved fifties.
