... THE RUN CHASE ...
When Zachary Carter and Jonathan Van Lange were out in the middle, 300 looked a real possibility, but West Indies have fallen well short of what they would have had in mind. Still, 234 is a competitive total on a wicket that has been slightly two-paced, with some balls skidding through, very few holding up, and the odd one keeping low. Whether it slows down with the sun beating down remains to be seen. Remember, two crucial points are at stake here. Whichever team wins this clash will carry points forward into the Super Six stage, while the loser will not take any points through. Back in a bit for the chase.
The star with the ball for South Africa, JJ Basson, is in for a chat. He says that they are happy with how they pulled things back and he is proud of the boys. Adds that he thought short ball was the best plan, spoke to the captain about it and is happy that he could execute it. Mentions that the 12th men and substitute fielders did a great job in keeping the energy of the boys to battle the heat. Ends by saying that their batters have been in form lately, and he is confident they will chase this down.
Tredness crept in under energy-sapping conditions, and Carter eventually perished. At that stage, Windies needed Van Lange to dig in, but he threw his wicket away soon after. Once he fell, the tail failed to muster much resistance, as the Proteas boys completed the clean-up job. JJ Basson was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers, finishing with a five-wicket haul, while during the middle phase, Paul James and Michael Kruiskamp brought some much-needed control for South Africa.
Zachary Carter looked uncomfortable initially but grew in confidence and began taking on the change bowlers. Skipper Joshua Dorne walked in ahead of Jewel Andrew at number 3 and struggled to get his innings moving. Against the run of play, three wickets in a single over from JJ Basson reduced West Indies to 115/4. Carter then joined hands with Jonathan Van Lange to pull the innings back on track, with Carter going on to notch up his maiden Youth ODI hundred.
An innings that promised a lot, but it all fizzled out. From being 193/4, West Indies lost 6 wickets for 41 runs to be bowled out for 234. A job well done by South Africa, who showed great composure and skill in pulling things back after being put under pressure. After opting to bat first, it was a tough interrogation early on for the two Windies' openers, with the South African new-ball attack testing them with pace and some well-directed short balls.
