Fortnite’s latest patch, v34.21, has landed and although it may not be the most expansive update in terms of core gameplay changes, it certainly brings plenty of punch with pop culture crossovers, silly surprises, and new mythic gear. Rolled out during the early hours of April 1, this update marks Epic Games’ annual April Fools tradition with a mix of humour and high-stakes boss battles.

Mortal Kombat invades Fortnite island

The biggest highlight of v34.21 is the full-fledged arrival of Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion, who is now more than just a cosmetic skin. He debuts as a new island boss in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2. Players can find and challenge Scorpion on the island, and if they manage to defeat him, they’ll earn the Mythic Scorpion’s Kombat Kit - a powerful loadout tied to the character - and a new cosmetic known as the First Blood Medallion.

This update also introduces three new Mortal Kombat–themed landmarks across the Fortnite map. Although their exact locations haven’t been revealed officially, players have already begun sharing footage of these high-detail POIs on social media. These new zones not only add fresh combat zones but also play into Fortnite’s expanding narrative built around crossovers.

Fortnite gets playful with April quests

In keeping with the date of the update, Epic Games has injected a bit of fun into the game through a series of quirky April Fools–themed quests. Players can now complete challenges such as “Touch Grass” and “Land Over Here and Over There” - names that poke fun at gaming culture while offering minor rewards.
While the quests may seem humorous on the surface, they are part of the broader strategy to keep content flowing without the need for heavy seasonal overhauls.
The update also sees the return of Water Sprites, which were previously removed due to a bug. These visual companions, popular among players for their whimsical charm, are once again functional and add aesthetic flair to loadouts.
Notably, downtime for this patch lasted just over two hours, beginning at 1 a.m. PDT and wrapping up around 3:05 a.m, slightly longer than the anticipated 90 minutes but still within expectations for Fortnite’s recent update cadence.
Though v34.21 isn’t packed with major gameplay shifts, it continues Epic Games' consistent strategy of blending popular franchises with bite-sized content drops. With hints about upcoming collaborations, including Devil May Cry, The Walking Dead's Negan, and Capcom crossovers - Fortnite is gearing up for an action-packed April.
For now, grab your gear, track down Scorpion, and don’t forget to touch some grass.
