In a unique marriage of gaming and environmental activism, Saudi Arabia’s Jameel Motorsport has taken a bold leap to educate young gamers about the consequences of deforestation. Partnering with Serviceplan Arabia, the motorsport brand launched The Treeless Map in Fortnite - a custom-built map that eliminates one of the game’s most essential elements: trees.
The initiative is part of a wider campaign aimed at aligning with Saudi Arabia’s climate goals and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. By transforming a key survival mechanic in Fortnite into a lesson on resource scarcity, Jameel Motorsport is reaching out to the youth in their digital playground and the impact has been instant.
When virtual worlds tackle real issues
Fortnite players know how crucial trees are in the game. Beyond mere decoration, they provide wood, a fundamental material for building and survival. By removing this key resource, The Treeless Map forces players to navigate a harsher environment, symbolising the real-world fallout of environmental degradation.
“With youth spending over 22 hours a week on platforms like Fortnite, traditional awareness campaigns struggle to break through,” explained Karim Mroueh, Head of Digital and Innovation at Serviceplan Group Middle East. “To truly connect, we had to enter their world and disrupt it in a way that provokes reflection.”
In a digital world where fast-paced action rules the day, slowing players down with obstacles rooted in real-life issues has proven effective. Within just 24 hours of its launch, the campaign garnered over 1 million impressions and brought 24,000 new followers to Jameel Gaming’s Instagram account.
Taking the climate fight to Fortnite
The campaign highlights a sobering statistic - every minute, 2,400 trees are cut down globally. By placing this reality into Fortnite’s fast-paced universe, Jameel Motorsport hopes to foster a sense of urgency and awareness among the youth.
“This initiative reflects our broader commitment to climate action,” said Munir Khoja, Managing Director of Marketing Communications at Abdul Latif Jameel. “By challenging players to adapt to a world without trees or water, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for our planet’s fragile ecosystems.”
The campaign’s innovation lies in its simplicity, a small tweak in gameplay mechanics with enormous educational impact. And it’s already sparking conversations beyond the screen.
“Gaming has the power to entertain, educate, and inspire,” added Rami Hmadeh, Managing Partner at Serviceplan Arabia. “Through platforms like Fortnite, we can turn players into changemakers.”
As The Treeless Map continues to engage players globally, it stands as a testament to how digital worlds can reflect and even influence the real-world priorities.
