Andrew and Tristan Tate Charged in UK with Sexual Assault and Human Trafficking
The influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate have recently been officially charged in the UK with a number of serious criminal offences including rape, human trafficking and actual bodily harm. The CPS announced on Wednesday that 21 charges have been authorized against them after an investigation by Bedfordshire police.
The announcement represents the first time UK officials have acknowledged criminal actions taken by the individuals, whose reported actions have drawn severe international condemnation. The charges date back to 2024, and were prosecuted after the CPS received a thorough evidence file from Bedfordshire Police, after several complaints made by women in the UK.
Former online influencer Andrew Tate, 38, is facing 11 charges related to three complainants. The accusations include rape causing physical harm, trafficking humans, and managing prostitution to make money. His brother Tristan Tate, who is 36, is charged with 10 offenses. These charges involve rape, human trafficking, and physical harm linked to another complainant.
In response, the CPS revealed that while those charges were indeed authorized as far back as last year, any criminal action in the UK has been held up by the brothers’ still-unfolding legal battles in Romania, where they are currently embroiled in a similar, though not identical, set of criminal investigations. A European arrest warrant has already been issued for their extradition, and Romanian courts have already granted the extradition of the brothers’ return to the UK once their domestic cases are settled. In the meantime, UK prosecution remains pending on the outcome of the Romanian investigation.
The Tate brothers were arrested in Romania at the end of 2022 and formally charged there in 2023 with allegedly running an organized crime group that recruited women for sexual exploitation. Romanian authorities have charged Andrew Tate with rape in the same ongoing criminal case.
Andrew Tate, the former kickboxer and now-internet-pundit, became infamous for his online provocateurs and misogynistic views about gender roles and masculinity. For all the believers he has amassed online, his ascent to social media stardom has been paralleled by increasing legal scrutiny in recent years, as prosecutors in several nations investigate claims of abuse and exploitation.
The UK charges represent a game changing new facet to the legal dangers that the Tates each face, and their possible extradition could see their high-profile case land in British courts within months.
The CPS has yet to announce a trial date, as multiple extradition proceedings remain ongoing in Romania.
